Up next for Sonia Bompastor's Blues is a pre-season friendly against Arsenal and goalkeeper Hannah Hampton is raring for the Stateside derby.

In the second match of our pre-season tour of the USA, the Blues play London rivals Arsenal at Audi Field in Washington, DC on Sunday.

This will be the second game with Bompastor at the helm, following our 3-1 win over NJ/NY Gotham in New Jersey, and another opportunity for the squad to keep implementing our new head coach's philosophy.

And for goalkeeper Hampton, it is a chance for the Blues to make their mark in the American capital.

'Whenever you play Arsenal it’s never a friendly, is it?' Hampton said. 'We will be trying our best to turn Washington Blue... I’m sure it will be.

'We’re always learning and we need to keep doing that to perfect the way Sonia wants us to play. She’s got the ideas – and what systems we want to play against different teams - and we have to be ready with them at the beginning of the season.

'Pre-season is the time to mix around these things and to learn. It’s different tactics, different players. We have such a strong squad and it’s important we get the minutes because we will all need to play our part during the season. We all understand that the bigger picture is getting ready for the season.'

It has been a pre-season of learning for Hampton and the squad. The England international believes scoring three goals inside the opening 26 minutes in New Jersey suggests the process under Bompastor is making good progress.

'The fact we scored so soon into the game against Gotham and scored in quick succession shows what we’re doing is working,' Hampton added. 'We’re building those connections on the pitch.

'We had those connections last season, but they are completely different now in the way that this is a different style that has different movements.

'It’s coming along nicely, but there is still a lot we need to work on. These are pre-season games for a reason. We’ve got a chance to work on those differences now and be ready for the season to start.'

Like Hampton has already said, it is still a work in progress. even if the early signs under Bompastor have been so positive. It is no secret that the goalkeeper holds herself to the highest of standards and that has been no different while on tour. She hopes to keep making strides by embracing the new style of play.

'I want to take another step forward and really get to know what Sonia wants of me,' Hampton said. 'I want to improve.

'In the Gotham game, my passing wasn’t where I wanted it to be. I’ve got to get used to the patterns of play that we’re doing and the different movements because they are completely different from last season. I’m having to play the ball into different places and positions.

'I’m trying to learn everyone’s movements and the patterns. I want to be more accurate with my passing and demand more from myself. I might be harsh on myself, but I know I can give a lot more.'
