Hannah Hampton was deservedly named Player of the Match in the Euro 2025 final as the Chelsea goalkeeper followed a fine performance in normal time with two decisive penalty shoot-out saves that helped England beat Spain.
Hampton has been outstanding throughout the tournament, notably in the quarter-final success over Sweden, and she was at the top of her game once again as the Lionesses edged past the world champions in Basel.
Having only been assured of the gloves in the build-up to the tournament, Hampton has enjoyed a wonderful few weeks in Switzerland. Now she is a European champion.
‘This team is unbelievable, incredible,’ she reacted.
‘We have shown throughout this tournament we can come back when we go a goal down. We have that grit, we have English blood in us. We never say die, we keep going, and we did that today.
‘This is England. This is our moment. We have dug in for 120 minutes, we have done what we needed to do to keep Spain out. It was just one kick and we did that – it was better pens than the last one, let’s be honest!’
Hampton kept out efforts from Mariona Caldentey and Aitana Bonmati to hand England the initiative in what was another dramatic shoot-out involving the Lionesses. It was left to Chloe Kelly to blast home the winner, although Hampton admitted she wasn’t certain what the state of play was.
‘When Chloe stepped up, I turned around to the fans and I was just miming and doing a kicking motion and saying, ‘if she scores, do we win?!’
‘I completely lost track of what was going on! They were just cheering and yelling at me, and I thought, ‘I don’t know what the answer is to that!’ As soon as I saw her run up, I thought, ‘that’s it, we’ve won’.
‘I can’t believe it. It’s not going to sink in for a while.’
When it does, Hampton will appreciate the magnitude of her role in another famous night the Lionesses.
