A goal from Pernille Harder against her former club helped Chelsea FC Women earn a 2-1 victory in the first leg of our Champions League quarter-final tie against Wolfsburg and Harder highlighted the Blues second half performance as a key factor in securing Wednesday’s win.
Harder captained Wolfsburg in last year’s Champions League final but it was her goal against her former side that ensured Chelsea take a 2-1 lead into next week’s second leg.
Wolfsburg dominated the opening half at the Szusza Ferenc Stadium, but Emma Hayes’ side responded well in the second half and netted twice in 11 minutes through Sam Kerr and Harder.
Our opponents pulled one back from the penalty spot through Dominque Janssen but the Blues withheld some late pressure to secure our first ever victory against Wolfsburg. Harder revealed the changes that were made at the break which proved crucial in securing the first-leg triumph.
She said: ‘It was a good game and there were chances at both ends. We came out much better in the second half, with much more energy. We created some good chances and scored two important goals, but Wolfsburg also did well and had some good chances.
‘We made some tactical changes at half-time and we played faster. We were talking about how we needed to move the ball faster, to move them around a bit.
‘I think that worked well, and we got two good goals in the second half. The first half of the tie is done, we are 2-1 up and we are happy with that.’
Chelsea return to league action against Aston Villa at Kingsmeadow on Sunday before heading back to Budapest for the away leg of our quarter final on Wednesday.
The Blues go into the second leg with a 2-1 lead, but with the away goals rule, Harder indicated the importance of Chelsea approaching Wednesday’s fixture with the aim of securing another win against Wolfsburg, rather than defending our first-leg advantage.
‘We have to look at this game to prepare for next week’s game,’ added Harder. ‘We have to go out, but not to defend our 2-1 lead.
‘We have to go out to win the game and score more goals.’
This Sunday's game against Aston Villa kicks off at 2.30pm and can be watched on BT Sport and the FA Player.
