Pernille Harder netted her first hattrick for Chelsea FC Women in our Continental League Cup semi-final victory over West Ham United on Wednesday, but the Blues forward was quick to praise the overall team performance.
Chelsea hit the ground running at Kingsmeadow and were 4-0 up inside 27 minutes courtesy of two goals from Harder, a long-range strike from Sophie Ingle and a tap-in from Bethany England. We withstood some pressure from the visitors early in the second half before Fran Kirby poked home from close range and Harder then fired a low drive into the bottom corner to clinch her first hat-trick for the club.Wednesday’s victory booked our place in the Continental League Cup final for the second successive year and Harder was delighted with the standard of football played by the Blues and highlighted the impact of our second-half substitutes. She said: ‘We did really well from the beginning and in the first half we played some really good football.‘It was tough for West Ham going into the break 4-0 down. The second half we didn’t start too well but then we got better.‘The players who came on in the second half were really good, it made a change and we fell back into our rhythm again. Overall it was a really good performance.’
The Blues have been in scintillating form in front of goal, and that continued against the Hammers with Chelsea once again proving ruthless and clinical in attack.Harder, Kirby, England and Sam Kerr now have a combined total of 29 goals between them in all competitions and Harder insists there is more to come from the Chelsea frontline. She added: ‘It’s always nice to score a hat-trick but most of all I’m just happy that it also felt good within the game. Myself but also within the team, we had some really good moments in the game when we played some really good football.‘With every game, I settle in even more and I get to know my team-mates better and they get to know me even better.‘In attack but also as a whole group too, in the way we play, we are improving with every game. It’s really positive.’
Chelsea now face Bristol City in the Continental League Cup final at Vicarage Road on Sunday 14 March and Harder hopes the Blues can seal our first - but not our last - trophy of the season. She said: ‘We want to win it a lot! We want to win as many trophies as possible and this is the first final we will be playing in.‘Every game we win and also every title we win will put more confidence in us so in that way, it will of course give us some more confidence in winning more titles if we get the first one pretty early.’
