As the Academy calendar takes a brief pause over Christmas and New Year, we sat down with Chelsea Under-18s head coach Hassan Sulaiman to reflect on the 2025/26 campaign so far and the development of his young Blues.
It was a whirlwind start for the Under-18s, with a packed schedule of matches alongside education and personal development programmes off the pitch. Despite the intensity, there is much to celebrate as we reach the halfway stage. Chelsea remain unbeaten in the Under-18 Premier League, recording six wins and three draws, and currently sit second behind Crystal Palace, with three games in hand over the leaders.
The Blues also made a positive start to our FA Youth Cup campaign. In the third round, we faced a tough Brentford side in a west London derby, but demonstrated the team's form and unity to secure a 2-1 victory, progressing into the fourth round.
After the final training session at Cobham before the Christmas break, we spoke to Sulaiman to hear his reflections on the season so far.
Hassan, as we reach the Christmas break, it’s a good moment to reflect on the season so far. How have you found it?
'It’s been a really strong start for the Under-18s. One way to measure that is the league table and we’re in a really good position. But beyond results, I focus on the progress the group has made from the first game to now. Our performances have steadily improved and we’re on an upward trajectory.
'I also look at individual development. Many players are making fewer mistakes than at the start of the season, which highlights both their maturity and the effectiveness of our development programme. The boys have been busy, competing in different competitions almost every week, but they’ve handled it very well.'
It has been a busy couple of months. How have you and the players managed such a demanding programme?
'The boys have managed it really well. The schedule is rigorous - physically and mentally demanding - but they’ve shown great resilience. They’ve also been exposed to Under-17s fixtures and the UEFA Youth League with the Under-19s, so some players are participating across four or five competitions. Seeing them perform consistently across all those levels has been fantastic.'
Has there been any particular focus in training where you’ve seen significant progress?
'Yes. Early in the season, we focused on controlling games - our shape, building through thirds and concepts such as wide triangles and side diamonds.
'More recently, we’ve concentrated on defensive organisation. We're finding the right moments to press, regain possession and exploit space behind the opposition. The boys have made good progress, though there is still room to take it to the next level.'
How has your staff contributed to this development?
'I’m lucky to have a fantastic team. Harry Hudson works closely with me on coaching in and out of possession and his ideas have really helped the group grow. Jake Askew manages the goalkeepers and set-pieces, we’ve scored a lot from set-plays thanks to him. Danny Torpey oversees sports science, keeping the boys in excellent physical condition.
'We also have Jack Hall-Martinez and Tom Mallett, who focus on team tactics and individual development respectively. Collaboration is key and the diversity of ideas within the staff has been crucial to our success so far.'
Similar to last season, we’ve seen multiple schoolboys step up. How have the younger players adapted?
'The schoolboys have been excellent. Our Under-16s are very talented and, when they step up to train or play with the Under-18s, the transition is smooth. The structure of the sessions allows them to integrate without disruption.'
With the Christmas break upon us, how important is it for staff and players to take some time off?
'It’s essential. Players need to rest both physically and mentally, and staff also benefit from reflection and time with family. These breaks are rare as players progress through the Academy, so it’s a valuable opportunity to refresh before the second half of the season.'
Looking ahead to 2026, what do you want your players to carry forward?
'Momentum is key. The group has been working hard and pushing each other in a very competitive environment. I want them to maintain that drive when we return in January. The healthy competition in training will continue to challenge them and support their development.'
Finally, what excites you most about this group heading into the New Year?
'The squad depth and talent are very exciting. We have creative players, strong defenders and players who can control the game from midfield. When you combine that with a committed, collaborative staff, it creates a really competitive and motivated environment.
'The boys train hard, they want to perform, and that gives me confidence about what we can achieve in the second half of the season.'
