After scoring a hat-trick in our 9-1 Women's League Cup win over Liverpool on Sunday, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd put the performance down to Chelsea's high-energy opening to the match.
We could only managed a 1-1 draw against the Reds in the Women's Super League back in November after an Alyssa Thompson strike saw us take the lead early on in the encounter. Yet this time around, Sam Kerr's brace saw us race to a 2-0 advantage after just 17 minutes.
Rytting Kaneryd, who bagged a hat-trick in the 9-1 win, felt the ruthless beginning was the difference-maker just over a month later.
'I think we started the game with a lot of energy,' said the Sweden international. 'We showed from the first minute that we wanted to win the game and have a better performance than last time we were here, so I think from minute one, we knew this was our game, and it was in our hands. I’m happy.'
The emphatic victory was the ideal way to finish 2025 on a high note, and for Rytting Kaneryd, it meant she also passed a personal milestone in a blue shirt.
And while the winger explained that she often looks to help her team-mates with killer passes, she also acknowledged the positives in going for goal herself.
'It’s my first hat-trick for Chelsea,' continued Rytting Kaneryd. 'It feels amazing, I’m super happy with it. It’s always nice to score goals and to help the team to win. Today we scored a lot of goals, and I’m super pleased with that.
'It’s always a balance. I think it comes naturally to me to look for the pass, but of course, you have to be ruthless, and you have to do everything at 100 per cent. Today, especially for me in the second half, I just saw the goal, and I just finished myself.
'It went okay, I guess!'
