Chelsea FC Women face Wolfsburg in the second leg of our Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday and Blues boss Emma Hayes believes her side can reach another level.

Chelsea go into the away leg with a 2-1 advantage as we look to progress to the last four of the European competition for the third time in our history.

Last year’s finalists stand in the way of the Blues reaching the semi-final stage, and speaking to the media at Cobham this afternoon, Hayes says her players are focused on completing the job in Budapest.

She said: ‘We play to win. That is the big thing. I don’t look at home and away, we play to win, and we play to play our game.

‘We play to do what is expected regardless of it being home and away. Anything less than aspiring towards that is a negotiable that is non-existent and the players know what we will expect.

‘I think they are reflective of their performance last week, we’ve had time to analyse our performance and what we did, and I know there is another level to come from us yet.’

Wolfsburg dominated the first half of last week’s first leg but the Blues produced a strong second-half showing with goals from Sam Kerr and Pernille Harder helping Chelsea to victory.

Hayes highlighted the importance of the Blues focusing on imposing our own threats and producing the high standards that have resulted in the Blues losing just once in all competitions this season.

‘It’s important we play our game on Wednesday. That’s what I will look for from the team. We have to impose ourselves in our way with our strengths and defensively we do all the fundamentals at the levels that are needed for this type of game.

‘Our concentration and focus has to be extremely high because I expect even more relentless pressure from Wolfsburg.

‘They are Champions League finalists, multiple times. We are winning at the halfway point but they have the experience of being in this position so I expect the game and the challenges that they throw at us will be even bigger than they were in the first leg.’

One of many strengths that the Blues hold is the formidable partnership of Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby, who have currently scored a combined total of 37 goals this season.

It was the link-up play between Fran Kirby and Sam Kerr that proved decisive in our opening leg against Wolfsburg and Hayes spoke of their willingness to work hard and provide opportunities for the team.

‘For me, the thing that stands up, is the selflessness. It’s making runs, or decisions for someone else.

‘The amount of times Fran has been in great positions herself and set someone else up, the amount of times Sam makes a run, if not for herself but to clear space. That for me is as impactful as the chemistry between them, because they are the hardest things to get across to players, doing stuff for others, and those two understand it in their droves.’

Wednesday’s game kicks off at 1pm UK time (2pm CET) and can be viewed live on the website and the 5th Stand app. Geo-restrictions apply, and it cannot be viewed in the UK (where BT Sport are showing the game live), Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Mexico, Portugal, Sweden, Norway and Australia.
