Chelsea’s 6-0 win at Southampton on Saturday was one for the record books as we netted six away goals in a Premier League match for the fifth time and equalled our biggest winning margin for a top-flight game outside Stamford Bridge.
Here’s a look at the previous four occasions when we have found the net six times on our travels in the Premier League.
Barnsley – August 1997
Playing in the top flight for the first time in their 102-year history, Barnsley were given a rude awakening when Chelsea visited Oakwell early in the 1997/98 season as Dan Petrescu broke the deadlock and Gustavo Poyet netted his first Chelsea goal before Gianluca Vialli rifled home a superb effort from 20 yards to make it 3-0 at the interval.
Buoyed by his fine strike, the Italian struck with both feet and his head in the second half to complete a four-goal haul as the Blues handed the Tykes a 6-0 hammering in their only Premier League campaign to date.
Tottenham Hotspur – December 1997
Things didn’t appear to be going too badly for Christian Gross in his third game in charge of Tottenham Hotspur when Ramon Vega scored two minutes before half-time to cancel out Tore Andre Flo’s opener.
However, the second half was a nightmare for the home side as the Blues regained the lead through a Roberto Di Matteo header three minutes after the restart before proceeding to run riot with Flo netting his second and Petrescu and Mark Nicholls adding their names to the scoresheet.
By the time Flo competed his hat-trick in the final minute to make it 6-1, large blocks of empty seats could be seen around White Hart Lane as we sealed our biggest-ever derby win against Spurs.
Wigan Athletic – August 2010
After putting eight goals past Wigan on the final day of the 2009/10 season to seal the Premier League title, Chelsea continued in similar fashion when we visited the Latics for our second game of the following campaign.
Florent Malouda gave us the lead after 34 minutes and the floodgates opened in the second half as Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou each scored twice before Yossi Benayoun got his only goal for the Blues as we recorded our second straight 6-0 win following our opening-day triumph over West Bromwich Albion.
Everton – August 2014
A wild early-season game at Goodison Park saw the Blues taking the lead through Diego Costa after only 35 seconds and Branislav Ivanovic making it 2-0 within the first three minutes of the game.
However, much of the madness came midway through the second half when the two teams tallied five goals in a 10-minute spell as the Blues turned a 2-1 lead into a 5-3 advantage thanks to a Seamus Coleman own goal and strikes by Nemanja Matic and Ramires.
Having started the scoring in the opening minute, Diego Costa completed it in the final minute, racing clear after a neat flick by John Mikel Obi before beating Tim Howard to make it 6-3.
