Cole Palmer is a man of few words, so what he does say carries extra weight. To celebrate his new contract at Chelsea, we asked Palmer to talk us through some of the many highlights from his Blues career so far.
It has been a spectacular three years for our No.10 at Stamford Bridge, and that journey is set to continue for a long while yet, after signing a new deal until 2034.
Palmer is one of the most naturally talented players to have worn the blue shirt, a statement borne out by the reel of iconic moments he has provided since arriving in 2023.
Supporters, team-mates, coaches and the wider footballing public have been so lucky to bear witness to Palmer’s genius in recent years, and to help understand how he does it, we showed the man himself clips and photos of some of those standout moments.
This is what he had to say…
We start with Palmer’s very first day as a Chelsea player…
‘I remember it was so weird. I’d never left Manchester and then I came down here. It was the last day of the window; it felt so fast. I was just thinking, ‘What’s going on?’. I remember it like it was yesterday. It all felt different but I got used to it quick, and just wanted to start playing.’
Palmer scored his first goal from the penalty spot in a big win at Burnley…
‘I just knew I had to score. That was it. Raz [Sterling] just gave me the ball, to be fair to him. It wasn’t pre-planned. When I scored, I was just relieved to get up and running, and then felt ready to kick on.’
We saw his ‘cold’ celebration for the first time in our final game of 2023…
‘That was the first game back after I had got suspended on Christmas Eve and missed the game on the 27th. That was my first game back, 12.30pm, I enjoyed that one. And the celebration was the start of something good, wasn’t it?’
Two goals late in added time gave us a remarkable 4-3 win against Man United…
‘This one was mad. I don’t think I slept that night. It was madness. The Bridge was crazy. I think that fourth goal is my favourite ever.’
Palmer scored the fastest perfect hat-trick in Premier League history against Everton…
‘I felt like I was at the top of my game. Everything you touch works out. I should have scored five or six. I remember I missed a chance and I was fuming, but I got the fourth after, which was good.’
Palmer won the Premier League Young Player of the Season award in 2023/24…
‘I got robbed of the Player of the Season, but it is what it is! Individual awards are nice but they used to be better when you were younger. Now it’s more about the team. If your team wins and you play well, you will get the individual trophies.
‘That first season went very fast, but it was a very good one. I feel like I changed a lot as a person off the pitch, on the pitch, became more mature.’
Palmer scored four first-half goals against Brighton in September 2024…
‘This one was the maddest. I went to bed at 5am in the morning before this game. I can’t remember if I couldn’t sleep; I just ended up going to bed so late, but I ended up scoring four and I also missed another chance. I think I was offside, but my Dad doesn’t think I was.
'He said if I had went to bed earlier, I might have scored six. I told him if I went to bed earlier, I wouldn’t have had those four chances!’
We all remember his Panenka away to Tottenham…
‘That was funny, you know. It comes naturally. I didn’t think about that, I just did that to do it. That’s when I’m most relaxed. That was a good one, especially at that stadium.’
Two superb assists turned the UEFA Conference League final in our favour…
‘We had a bad first half and we needed to start doing some magic. I felt the responsibility to do that. I had already played in some finals but it was good to win one with Chelsea. Good memories.’
Palmer switched to No.10 before the Club World Cup…
‘It became available and I thought it would be nice. I’d worn No.10 when I was younger and I thought it would be nice.’
Palmer’s brace and assist against PSG won us the Club World Cup…
‘That was mad. New York, the stadium, everything about it made it one of the best days. It felt like a moment I told the world what I was all about.’
With the trophy and his awards for Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament…
‘Aurify me! That was good man, that was good.’
Palmer scored three away at Wolves during a season affected by injury…
‘That was nice to score a hat-trick especially when I was playing with injury, so it felt good.’
Palmer opened his account for this season on the opening day…
‘Good to be back and feeling good. It’s been a good start to the season with Joao and Morgan, so hopefully it can continue.’
A trademark Palmer strike decided a seven-goal thriller with Brighton…
‘It was just showing everyone I am back to how I am, and I feel good, and I’m ready again.’
Palmer has signed up for eight more years…
‘I’m confident Chelsea will go back to the top very soon and I want to be a part of that and play a big role in that. Chelsea mean a lot to me.’
