Sjoeke Nusken shares her footballing journey and how she likes to spend her time behind the scenes.
Could you start by telling us where you grew up and what it was like?
I grew up in a city called Hamm, close to Dortmund. It's not a really small town or a big city, but something in between. We had a big house there and a garden with a trampoline, so we played a lot outside. I have three sisters, so there was a lot of chaos!
What age did you start playing football?
I was five.
What was the name of your first grassroots team?
Hammer Spielvereinigung.
Who has been the biggest influence on your football career to date?
My sister. I started to play football because of her. My mum always took me to her games. And then they were short of players, so the coach asked me if I wanted to join.
Then the next day, I was asking my Mum when the next training session was! My sister played for the Germany Under-16 national team. But then she decided she wanted to have more free time so she didn't carry on as a professional.
What's been your career highlight to date?
Winning an Olympic bronze medal. The celebration with the team afterwards was so nice. My sisters drove all the way to Paris just to be there with me and celebrate. So it was a really nice experience. It still feels unreal when I look at my medal and hold it in my hand.
Who are your best friends in football?
Noreen Gunnewig, and then at Chelsea, Mayra (Ramirez), Hannah (Hampton) and Livia (Peng). There's also a girl who I shared a room with at school who is one of my best friends.
Could you name your top three favourite players of all time?
Thomas Muller, Marta and my sister.
Have you got any nicknames?
Sio.
What do you like to do away from football? How do you switch off?
Going for a walk, drinking coffee, stuff like this. And trying to play different sports: padel, tennis and ping-pong.
Are you watching any TV series currently?
Ride or Die. It's a bit of crime, but it's fun as well. Lucy (Bronze) recommended it to me.
If we looked at your Spotify playlist, who's dominating your most-played artists of the year?
I listen to a lot of German music. German party music, chill music... English music - a bit of everything, really!
What are your top three holiday destinations, either that you’ve been to or want to visit?
Fuerteventura, I would say home - because that's far away now - and Tenerife. I went there this summer, and it was really nice.
If you had guests over for dinner, what would you cook for them?
Sourdough bread. And then maybe a rice bowl or something where I put out some pots with different things in, and everyone can help themselves.
Can you tell the fans something they might not know about you?
I was in the army. I did my education there because you can get sponsored for playing sport. They support athletes, especially in sports where there isn't a lot of money. I was there for four years, starting at the age of 19. It was a nice experience because you are really close together with your team, a bit like being here at Chelsea. We did some really crazy things!
What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
Enjoy the moment.
Finally, what does football mean to you?
It means a lot. We get to experience so much, like when we went to Australia and New Zealand in the summer. The whole reason we got to go was because of football. I'm really thankful to have the opportunity to do it.
