It was a night of mixed emotions for the Chelsea players on international duty. While there were goals from a trio of Blues across the continent and a place secured at next year's World Cup, the night ended in a disappointing defeat for our Lionesses against Spain.
Four members of the Chelsea squad were named in England's starting XI by Sarina Wiegman. Hannah Hampton began in goal, Lucy Bronze was at right-back, Keira Walsh led as captain midfield, and Lauren James was included in the attack.
The Lionesses entered the game having won their previous four World Cup qualifiers and atop Group A3, but Patri Guijarro and Alexia Putellas netted in the opening 45 minutes to put Spain two goals ahead at the interval.
The home side in Mallorca did not relent after the break. Putellas struck her second in the 55th minute and Claudia Pina whipped home a finish shortly after her introduction from the substitutes' bench to seal a resounding win for the world champions.
Hampton and Walsh completed 90 minutes for England, but James was brought off in the 59th minute and Bronze was replaced by fellow Chelsea defender Niamh Charles late on. Aggie Beever-Jones wasn't included in the match-day squad.
It was a better evening for Sjoeke Nusken, who captained Germany to a win over Norway that sealed their place at next year's World Cup.
Germany knew victory over their closest Group A4 rivals would guarantee a spot in Brazil, and they opened the scoring inside 20 minutes through Marie Muller.
A second arrived soon after, via Carlotta Wamser, and despite Norway fashioning chances during the contest, Germany did not relinquish their lead as they sealed their spot in next year's tournament.
Erin Cuthbert got herself on the scoresheet and claimed two assists as Scotland recorded a resounding 6-0 win over Israel in World Cup qualifying. However, the Blues midfielder's night ended with her being carried off on a stretcher in second-half stoppage time.
Cuthbert opened the scoring for Scotland in the 17th minute. The 27-year-old collected the ball 20 yards from goal and unleashed a fine strike from the edge of the penalty area into the net.
In the second period, Cuthbert provided the pass for Caroline Weir's second – and Scotland's third – goal of the game. And after Weir had completed her hat-trick, the Blues midfielder teed up Lauren Davidson to strike.
Kirsty Hanson gave the scoreline further gloss, but as the game entered its final moments, an innocuous challenge left Cuthbert in need of prolonged treatment and, unfortunately, she was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher.
Elsewhere, Sandy Baltimore scored a stunning goal as France recorded a 2-0 victory over Poland in World Cup qualifying.
France were forced to wait for their opening goal of the night, but Melvine Malard broke Poland's resistance early in the second half.
Baltimore's strike came just after the hour mark. The Chelsea winger escaped the attention of a defender, exchanged passes with Malard, and broke into the box to confidently fire home and seal victory for the visitors.
A goal from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd wasn't enough for Sweden, as they were beaten 2-1 in Denmark in their World Cup qualifier.
Cecilie Floe opened the scoring for Denmark in the first half, but a close-range finish from Rytting Kaneryd drew Sweden level early in the second. However, former Blues forward Pernille Harder proved Denmark's match-winner, as she netted in the 65th minute.
Chelsea goalkeeper Livia Peng played 90 minutes as Switzerland recorded a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Malta in World Cup qualifying. After five matches, Switzerland top their group and hold a three-point advantage over Turkey.
Chelsea duo Veerle Buurman and Wieke Kaptein both started for the Netherlands against the Republic of Ireland, but they were unable to help their country avoid a 3-2 World Cup qualifying defeat in Cork.
Kyra Carusa opened the scoring for Ireland, but they were pegged back by Dominique Janssen with 20 minutes to play. Abbie Larkin restored the hosts' lead immediately, only for Victoria Pelova to equalise with ten to play.
Yet as the game appeared to be heading for a draw, Amber Barratt prodded home from close range to condemn the Netherlands to defeat.
