Germany and Sweden both got off the mark at Women’s Euro 2025 with a win apiece, as Nathalie Bjorn, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Sjoeke Nusken all started for their national sides.
Nusken’s Germany delivered a 2-0 win when they faced Poland in the evening kick-off in Group C .
The scores were held at 0-0 after 45 minutes thanks to some superb defending from Poland, but it was a different story after the break.
A moment of magic from Jule Brand broke the deadlock. Her drilled effort from the edge of the area sailed into the top corner and put Germany ahead, and from then on, their dominance began to take hold.
Buhl was involved again as she delivered an angled ball towards the far post, but Nusken headed wide. It mattered little as Christian Wuck’s side soon had a second. Brand once again put in the cross and striker Lea Schuller placed a superb header into the bottom corner.
Nusken had another attempt on goal from the edge of the area with five minutes remaining, her effort on the half-volley bouncing just wide of the post.
Despite Poland's brave attempts, Germany were just too strong and took the victory alongside a valuable clean sheet.
Earlier in the day, Blues duo Nathalie Bjorn and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd were both selected by Sweden boss Peter Gerhardsson to start against Denmark and they contributed to a 1-0 win.
Rytting Kaneryd was immediately on the front foot, turning to beat her marker on the right wing after just two minutes and picking out Filippa Angeldal in the box, but the Real Madrid midfielder saw her shot blocked.
Sweden dominated the game in terms of possession and shots on goal for long periods but had to be patient to make the breakthrough. With 55 minutes gone, Kosovare Asllani played a neat one-two with Angeldahl, who powered a low shot into the far corner to put her side 1-0 up.
Rytting Kaneryd was replaced by Sofia Jakobsson after 83 minutes, having put in a typically bright performance.
Nine minutes of added time were tagged onto the end of the 90, leaving Bjorn and the rest of the Sweden defence to keep things tight and prevent Denmark from finding an equaliser. They accomplished that aim, putting three points on the board and taking a step towards qualification for the knockout stages.
