Argentina and Senegal played their final warm-up games ahead of the World Cup in the early hours of Wednesday morning and Enzo Fernandez, Mamadou Sarr and Nicolas Jackson were all involved.
Argentina defeated Iceland 3-0 in Alabama. Enzo Fernandez came on at half-time with the world champions already a goal to the good courtesy of Valentin Barco’s early strike from outside the box.
Fernandez replaced Exequiel Palacios and was deployed in central midfield as Argentina largely dominated. Lionel Messi, who came up against Daniel Gudjohnsen, the son of his former Barcelona team-mate Eidur, converted a 72nd-minute penalty before Thiago Almada added gloss to the scoreline late on.
Argentina will now focus on the defence of their crown, which begins with a game against Algeria in Kansas City on Wednesday 17 June, kick-off 2am UK time.
Senegal and Saudi Arabia played out a goalless draw in Texas in their final friendly before the tournament starts.
Sarr started in central defence for the Lions of Teranga and was replaced by Kalidou Koulibaly with eight minutes remaining. Both goalkeepers were busy and Senegal hit the woodwork, too.
Jackson was introduced on the hour, but his evening was cut short when he was shown a second yellow card six minutes from time.
The result ends Senegal’s run of scoring in 11 consecutive games. They will now prepare for their opening match of the World Cup against France next Tuesday 16 June, kick-off 8pm.
