Ben Chilwell played his first England game since November 2021 as the Three Lions beat a Ukraine team featuring Mykhailo Mudryk 2-0.

With Luke Shaw suspended following his red card in Italy, Chilwell was handed a chance at left-back and he impressed for Gareth Southgate’s side, attacking with urgency and quality when in possession. Defensively he and his team-mates were relatively untroubled as England comfortably continued their perfect start to Euro 2024 qualifying.

At a sold-out Wembley, it was a pretty quiet first half-hour in which both teams were continually halted by the offside flag. Chilwell did deliver one early dangerous cross from the left flank that nearly found Harry Kane.

England’s all-time record goalscorer would add to his tally on 37 minutes. Chilwell had got England on the front foot with a dart forward from the halfway line and a pass into Kane’s feet. He switched the play to Bukayo Saka, whose cross was turned in by Kane at the far post. Chilwell had continued his run into the box too to cause the Ukraine defence extra problems.

Almost instantly Saka doubled England’s lead with an exquisite curling strike from outside the box.

Ukraine struggled to muster anything in response, with Mudryk given very little space to work with. He was withdrawn on the hour.

England were content to play in second gear for much of the second half, keeping Ukraine at arm’s length. Ivan Toney came on for his debut and with four minutes remaining, Conor Gallagher entered the fray for his second sub appearance in four days.

He had probably the best chance of the second half after making a trademark run into the box, and it was Chilwell who found him after combining with Jack Grealish. On the stretch, Gallagher forced a diving save from the visiting keeper, who then held a Harry Maguire header from the resulting, Chilwell-delivered, corner.

There was still time for Gallagher to set up a chance for Grealish, well saved, so 2-0 it finished.

Gallagher now has six caps, and Chilwell 18. This was Mudryk’s 10th Ukraine game. Reece James returned to Chelsea yesterday for assessment on an ongoing issue.

England are next in action in June, playing Malta and North Macedonia in a pair of Euro 2024 qualifiers.
