David Fofana wore the armband for Ivory Coast Under-23s at the start of a mini-tournament being held in Morocco and helped his side to a 3-2 victory over the host nation’s U23s.

The Chelsea striker was fouled early on for a penalty that gave the West Africans the lead, converted by RB Salzburg teenager Karim Konate and the lead was soon doubled. The Moroccans fought back to level the scores by half-time but Ivory Coast struck a winner shortly after the restart when Konate scored his second.

Three Chelsea players were involved as England Under-20s overcame Germany 2-0 at Manchester City’s Academy Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Carney Chukwuemeka (pictured top) skippered the side and Bashir Humphreys, currently on loan in Germany at Paderborn, also started, while Harvey Vale came on for the last 20 minutes. Both goals came from a former Chelsea Academy player Sam Iling-Junior who is now at Juventus.

Charlie Webster was the scorer of the only goal for England Under-19s in Walsall, where they beat Hungary at the start of an elite level of qualifiers for the next Euros for that age group.

The Chelsea development squad regular capitalised after a cross was pushed out by the goalkeeper. Lewis Hall also played. He came close to joining his club-mate on the scoresheet with a shot that was saved as England dominated against a Hungary side which finished the game with 10 players. Zak Sturge was an unused sub.

Chelsea’s youth team captain Leo Castledine played a part in England Under-18s’ fightback from going a goal down to win away in Croatia. Having come on with an hour played, shortly before the Croatia opening goal, the midfielder set up fellow substitute Jobe Bellingham, the younger brother of Jude, for the equaliser. Man City’s Joel Ndala then quickly scored the winner with all the goals in the 2-1 result coming in a three-minute spell.

Also victorious while representing England in a European Under-17 championship qualifier were Michael Golding, who captained, and Josh Acheampong and Somto Boniface who also started. The Young Lions won 3-1 against Denmark in a game held in the Netherlands, with Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri with two goals and Man City’s Justin Oboavwoduo with one the scorers. Chelsea’s Kiano Dyer remained on the bench.

Away from England games, Gaga Slonina played in goal for the USA Under-20s side in a 4-0 defeat against France, in the first of three games for them taking place in Marbella over this international break.
