Marc Cucurella played the full 90 minutes and helped Spain record a famous 6-0 away win against Turkey on Sunday evening.
Even by the European champions’ high standards this was an outstanding display of attacking football that silenced a raucous home crowd in Konya and underlined Spain’s credentials ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
After netting his first Spain goal in Bulgaria on Thursday, Cucurella once again lined up at left-back and watched on as Pedri opened the scoring on six minutes with a pinpoint curling finish from the edge of the box.
Cucurella’s incisive ball into the box started Spain’s second, with Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal passing sharply to set up a chance for Arsenal’s Mikel Merino. He calmly slid the ball into the net from close range.
Turkey tried to muster a response, with their most threatening attacks coming down the opposite flank to where Cucurella was positioned. But it was Spain who got the game’s third goal in added time at the end of the first half, Pedri teeing up Merino to convert again.
Another incisive Spain move culminated in their fourth of the evening, substitute Ferran Torres the scorer after good work from Lamine Yamal. Shortly before the hour, Merino completed his hat-trick with a stunning strike from range.
Spain were not done, as Pedri finished confidently again after being released by Oyarzabal. They had become the first team to score six goals against Turkey on Turkish soil since England notched eight in 1984.
The result moves Spain three points clear of Georgia and Turkey in Group E of World Cup qualifying and extends their unbeaten run to 22 games.
For Cucurella, it has been another productive international break.
