There was late drama as an England side that featured four Blues across the 90 minutes needed a late penalty to secure a draw against Canada in their opening match at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The tournament features 24 teams and runs from 5 to 27 September. England WU20 head coach Lydia Bedford selected Chelsea's Katie Cox in goal, with fellow Blues Lola Brown and Vera Jones also named in the starting line-up. Two more young Blues, Chloe Sarwie and Eva Hendle, were named among the substitutes.
The Lionesses fell behind just after half-time, when English-born Annabelle Chukwu netted for the Canadians.
Brown was switched for Sarwie in the second half, and with five minutes remaining, England still trailed by a goal. England’s fortunes changed in the closing stages when they were awarded a penalty.
The responsibility fell to Aston Villa's Rachel Maltby to take the spot-kick, and she showed no nerves in helping England take a point after 89 minutes.
England take on Tanzania on Tuesday 8 September at 5pm and Brazil on Friday 11 September at 2pm in their remaining Group B fixtures, which will all take place in Bielsko-Biala.
After the group stage, the tournament progresses to the knockout rounds and the Women's U-20 World Cup final will be played in Lodz on Sunday 27 September.
