Chelsea striker Sam Kerr made her long-awaited return to international football this afternoon, featuring for Australia for the first time since 2023 and helping the Matildas claim a 2-1 victory over Wales.
Kerr spent 20 months on the sidelines due to a knee injury sustained in January 2024, but made her comeback last month for Chelsea against Aston Villa and promptly scored her 100th goal for the Blues.
The 32-year-old has continued to feature in the weeks since under Sonia Bompastor and received a call-up for her country's friendlies against Wales and England during the current international window.
Wales were first up, with the game taking place this afternoon at the Cardiff City Stadium. Kerr was included in the starting XI and was involved in the opening goal.
Courtney Nevin delivered a free-kick into the Wales six-yard box and Kerr, in customary fashion, tried to guide the ball home. She was unable to get a touch yet her attempt was enough to deceive Wales goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel and the ball ended up in the net.
Wales mounted a response and levelled the game in the second period when 18-year-old Mared Griffiths scored her first international goal.
However, with five minutes to play and after Kerr had departed the action, Caitlin Foord was teed up by Kyra Cooney-Cross and finished well to secure victory for Australia, who face England on Tuesday evening.
The Lionesses were also in action this evening, as they took on Brazil at the Etihad Stadium. Unfortunately for the reigning European champions, they were beaten 2-1.
Keira Walsh was the only Chelsea player to start the game and she was handed the captain's armband. However, Brazil started strongly and raced into a two-goal lead inside 18 minutes through Bia Zaneratto and Dudinha.
A red card shown to Angelina in the 21st minute gave England hope of a comeback, yet it wasn't until after the half-time interval that the home side found the net – Georgia Stanway converting from the penalty spot.
Blues duo Lucy Bronze and Aggie Beever-Jones were introduced shortly after the hour mark as the Lionesses searched for an equaliser, but Sarina Wiegman's side had left themselves too much to do.
Elsewhere, Catarina Macario claimed an assist for the USA in their friendly against Portugal, but the game ended in a 2-1 defeat for the hosts in Pennsylvania.
Macario got the USWNT off to the perfect start as she showcased neat footwork on the edge of the Portugal penalty area to feed the ball through to Rose Lavlle, who finished well across goal.
However, Portugal battled back as the game progressed and went into the break level after Benfica defender Diana Gomes found the net.
Both sides had opportunities to win the game in the second period; it was Portugal who made theirs count. With 18 minutes to play, Fatima Pinto struck and the visitors were able to hold on and secure victory.
