Chelsea star Lauren James scored twice for England as the Lionesses romped to a 4-0 victory over the Netherlands.

Sarina Wiegman once again selected Blues goalkeeper Hannah Hampton between the sticks, as well as Lucy Bronze, Keira Walsh and Lauren James. Chelsea's Wieke Kaptein and Veerle Buurman were also selected to start by Netherlands boss Andries Jonker.

It was Hannah Hampton who raced off her line early on to smother a chance from Vivianne Miedema, but after that early scare, England dominated the play in the opening exchanges of the game. The Lionesses then went close when Lauren Hemp jinked her way into space on the left-wing and lifted her cross over for Alessia Russo, but the striker headed just over.

Not long afterwards, England made the breakthrough. Hampton showed great vision to pick out an unmarked Russo with a long ball forwards, drifting wide to slip in Lauren James. The Chelsea star then let fly with a sensational shot with her left foot that hit the top corner of the net from 18 yards out.

The strike meant James has now been directly involved in seven goals in just five starts at major tournaments for England, with four goals and three assists.

With just over half an hour gone, England went close again when Blues midfielder Keira Walsh whipped in a dangerous cross, but Hemp's header couldn't find the target. James was a constant thorn in the Netherlands' side, firing four shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

With a one-goal advantage and a dominant display, things were looking bright for the Lionesses as the clock ticked over into first-half stoppage time, but soon got even better. Georgia Stanway hit a powerful shot from well outside the box into the back of the net to ensure England went in at half-time two goals to the good.

The attack continued firing after the restart. Russo had the ball in the back of the net four minutes after the half-time with a glancing header from an Alex Greenwood cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Just as the hour mark approached, James showed her quality once more. Slipping her marker inside the penalty area, the Chelsea forward was perfectly placed when Ella Toone's shot rebounded out. She made no mistake with the finish, putting England 3-0 up and firmly in control.

England were really firing. Russo's hard work on the left paid off when she carefully picked out Toone, who slotted in the fourth on 67 minutes. Shortly afterwards, James was replaced by Chloe Kelly and received a standing ovation from the supporters for her superb performance.

Niamh Charles and Aggie Beever-Jones were introduced with four minutes of normal time remaining, which meant that all six of the Chelsea players in the 23-player England squad played a part in the win.

In the later game, France faced tournament debutants Wales with Blues players Sandy Baltimore and Oriane Jean-Francois named on the bench.

Les Bleues took the lead through Clara Mateo after eight minutes, but were given a shock when Jess Fishlock scored Wales' first-ever goal in a major tournament, levelling the scores five minutes later.

France were back in front when Kadidiatou Diani converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time, and further goals came from Amel Majri and Grace Geyoro before Baltimore was introduced in the 75th minute.

The night ended with France on the brink of reaching the knockout stages of the tournament, needing a single point to guarantee their spot in the quarter-final.
