Congratulations to Noni Madueke, who has made his England debut!

The Chelsea winger came on in the 66th minute of the Three Lions’ 2-0 UEFA Nations League win against Finland, replacing Bukayo Saka on the right-hand side of the trio operating behind Harry Kane. Not long before, the England skipper put Lee Carsley’s side ahead with a blistering strike, and Levi Colwill came on for the injured Ezri Konsa.

Madueke was immediately in the thick of the action following his introduction, cutting inside and seeing a dangerous shot from the edge of the box deflected into the arms of the Finnish keeper.

He then rose highest to meet a cross from fellow sub Ebere Eze, although had his header found the net the referee’s whistle would have ruled the goal out for a push.

Madueke had a crucial role in England and Kane’s second on 76 minutes. He played a delightful one-two with Trent Alexander-Arnold before delicately teeing up Kane, who picked out the far corner in style, rounding off a sumptuous England move. Kane was quick to thank a smiling Madueke for the assist.

Shortly afterwards Madueke was released deep into enemy territory and had an effort well blocked by a couple of Finnish defenders. In stoppage time, he nearly got a touch on a dangerous low cross, and then shot wide, but although there was not the perfect ending in terms of a goal, it had still been a night to remember for the 22-year-old.

Colwill meanwhile had very little to do in the way of defending with England almost entirely dominant as they recorded another comfortable 2-0 win at the start of their Nations League campaign.

Elsewhere in that competition, in Prague, Ukraine lost 2-1 to Czechia with Mykhailo Mudryk playing the full game.

Czechia went ahead midway through the first half but not long after Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi headed a Mudryk corner against the woodwork, Ukraine levelled through Vladyslav Vanat.

Pavel Sulc got his second for Czechia in stoppage time at the end of the half, and the hosts extended their lead through a Tomas Soucek penalty. Georgiy Sudakov gave Ukraine hope late on but they could not find another equaliser and so suffered a second narrow Nations League defeat in four days.

Overnight in the USA, Caleb Wiley came off the bench for the hosts midway through the second half as they drew a friendly with New Zealand in Cincinnati. Christian Pulisic put the US ahead shortly after Wiley's introduction, before the All Whites grabbed a lucky late leveller.

Wiley, who is spending this season on loan at Strasbourg, has now won three senior US caps.
