Maika Hamano weighed in with an assist for Japan as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Spain on Friday, while Sandy Baltimore and Oriane Jean-Francois were both in action for France.
Japan will participate in the AFC Women's Asian Cup this summer, starting with a fixture against Chinese Taipei on July 9. On Friday, they travelled to the Butarque Stadium in Leganes to face Spain in a warm-up friendly.
It was Japan who took the lead against La Roja after 30 minutes, Hamano bursting down the right wing and pulling back a neat pass to Mina Tanaka, who turned and delivered a lofted finish beyond Cata Coll.
That lead would not last, though. Claudia Pina levelled the scores just before half-time, and goals from Vicky Lopez and Athenea del Castillo in the second half secured the victory for Spain.
Meanwhile, France hosted Brazil at the Stade des Alpes in Grenoble, with both Chelsea players in action as they warmed up for Euro 2025.
Baltimore started on the left wing, playing 67 minutes before being replaced by Manchester United’s Melvine Malard. Meanwhile, Jean-Francois was introduced in place of Sandie Toletti in the 68th minute. A brace from Grace Geyoro and a goal from Marie-Antoinette Katoto saw France complete a 3-2 victory over their South American opponents.
Across the Atlantic, Ashley Lawrence played the first 45 minutes of Canada’s 4-1 friendly win over Costa Rica at BMO Field, and Mayra Ramirez was an unused substitute in Colombia’s 0-0 draw with Mexico.
Colombia will compete in this summer’s Copa America Femenina, beginning with a clash against Venezuela on 17 July.
