There were tears for Argentina at the final whistle but not because of the result, after Emiliano Martinez helped his country to a 3-0 victory on an emotionally charged night in Buenos Aires.

The Chelsea goalkeeper featured for the full 90 minutes in what looked on paper like it should be a fairly low-key home friendly against Benin to conclude this international window.

However, the game was given added significance as Argentina legend Lionel Messi took to the field in his country's colours for one last time, having announced his international retirement.

Their captain was the centre of attention throughout at the famous Estadio Monumental, with tears flowing from the moment he walked out of the tunnel before kick-off, until the end of the long post-match ceremonies in the World Cup winner's honour.

The game itself was fairly straight forward for the home side, with Martinez rarely troubled on his way to a clean sheet and Valentin Barco remaining on the bench as an unused substitute.

The crowd got what they wanted though, as Messi got his name on the score sheet for the 126th and final time in an Argentina shirt, as well as setting up further goals for Nicolas Otamendi and Nico Paz for a comfortable 3-0 win.
