Mykhailo Mudyrk put in a performance of real quality as Ukraine came from behind to defeat Malta in a crunch Euro 2024 qualifier.

The Chelsea winger helped Ukraine win 3-1 in Attard, earning a penalty for his side - which Artem Dovbyk converted - before netting a goal for himself late on.

Mudryk started as a left forward for his nation but it was the hosts Malta who opened the scoring, surprisingly going in front after just 12 minutes.

However, when Mudryk is in full flow it’s hard to stop him and after applying the pressure, the visitors drew level as Ryan Camenzuli put through his own net.

A jinking run from Mudryk saw him felled in the area just before half-time, with the referee in no doubt that a spot-kick should be awarded and Dovbyk confidently slotted home.

Mudryk capped off his fine display by sealing an important three points by netting Ukraine’s third in the 3-1 win.

Elsewhere in Group C, England confirmed their place at next summer’s tournament in Germany with a similar come-from-behind 3-1 victory against Italy at Wembley.

A brace from Harry Kane either side of a Marcus Rashford goal ensured Gareth Southgate’s side booked their place at Euro 24, although Chelsea duo Conor Gallagher and Levi Colwill were both unused substitutes.

Malo Gusto was also an unused substitute as France defeated Scotland 4-1 in Lille, despite going a goal down to Steve Clarke’s side courtesy of a strike from former Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour.

Younger age groups

There was plenty of Chelsea representation at Under-21 level, with Lesley Ugochukwu starring for France as they stormed to a 9-0 home win over Cyprus.

The midfielder played at the heart of the French midfield and looked tidy on the ball and completed his defensive duties well, before making way in the second half.

Fellow midfielder Cesare Casadei, currently on loan at Leicester City, helped Italy to a 2-0 win over Norway, although goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom’s Finland side were cruelly defeated by Romania 1-0 with the winning goal coming in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

Earlier on Tuesday, four Chelsea U18 players featured for England as the Young Lions were held to a 1-1 draw with South Korea.

Ishe Samuels-Smith, Reiss Denny and Josh Acheampong all started, while Jimmy-Jay Morgan came off the bench at half-time.
