Pedro Neto and Portugal's warm-up for the FIFA World Cup continued with a draw away at tournament co-hosts Mexico.
It was supposed to be game played in a party atmosphere as the legendary Azteca in Mexico City - once the world's largest stadium - was officially re-opened for its first game following extensive redevelopment, ahead of hosting the opening match of this summer's World Cup. However, the excitement was soon overshadowed by the news of a supporter's tragic death at the stadium before kick-off.
It was in that difficult atmosphere that Portugal and Mexico played out a goalless draw. Neto was introduced as one of seven half-time substitutes by head coach Roberto Martinez as he examined all his World Cup options during this international break.
The competitive nature of this friendly was clear when Neto and Jesus Gallardo were both booked for a clash in the 54th minute, but it was Portugal who went closest to getting on the score sheet. They showed plenty of attacking threat, but despite a large number of shots were unable to find the net. Goncalo Ramos went closest to a goal, but saw his effort come back off the woodwork as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
Portugal and Neto will now continue their preparations with an away game against another of the World Cup co-hosts, the USA. That game will take place at the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey - venue for this year's World Cup final and Chelsea's triumph at last year's FIFA Club World Cup - in the early hours of Wednesday morning UK time.
