Neto started for Portugal at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon as new head coach Jorge Jesus marked his first match in charge with three points.

It was former Blue Joao Felix who broke the deadlock midway through the first half. His effort from outside the penalty area took a deflection off Ben Davies to beat Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward, and ultimately proved enough to settle the contest.

Portugal were more dominant than the scoreline suggested, having 23 shots at goal to Wales' five and Neto created an opening which saw a Ronaldo effort easily saved by Ward.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United man had the ball in the back of the net early in the second half but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Elsewhere, Jorrel Hato remained on the bench as the Netherlands left it late to secure a 1-1 draw with Germany in Amsterdam.

Felix Nmecha put the visitors ahead after 32 minutes, but Cody Gakpo struck in the second minute of stoppage time to earn the hosts a point in their Nations League opener.

Both nations are back in action on Sunday, with Hato’s Netherlands travelling to Serbia before Neto and Portugal take on Norway in Oslo.
