Our new signing Livia Peng showed why the goalkeeper is so highly rated after saving a penalty and making several other stops during Switzerland's narrow 2-0 defeat to reigning world champions Spain, as the Euro 2025 hosts exited the competition at the quarter-final stage.
While Peng was on the losing side on Friday evening in Bern, she can be proud of her performance between the sticks as her saves kept the reigning World Cup champions at bay for more than an hour.
La Roja fired 23 shots on goal during the 90 minutes, while their opponents failed to register a single shot on target.
Spain were piling on the pressure from the first whistle, and had a golden opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty, but Mariona Caldentey put her spot kick wide after seven minutes.
Peng made four saves in total, including an excellent stop in the first half from a Claudia Pina free-kick. Yet the deadlock was finally broken on 66 minutes when Aitana Bonmati held the ball up brilliantly inside the box with her back to goal, releasing the pass at the perfect moment for Athenea del Castillo, who slotted home.
There was nothing Peng could do about Spain’s second. Pina won the ball just outside the box, drove forward and unleashed a sublime curling effort from 20 yards out, as her shot found the top corner in some style.
Switzerland were heading out, but there was still time for more drama. When awarded a second penalty, two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas put the ball on the spot, but her strike was saved brilliantly by Peng.
The night ended with disappointment for the host nation, but they had made a monumental effort to keep the scoreline at 2-0 and there is plenty for Chelsea fans to be excited about, as our new ‘keeper showed exactly what she is capable of.
