On a dramatic night of international football, it was good news for Marc Cucurella as Spain booked their place at the 2026 World Cup, while Estevao scored yet again for Brazil.
European champions Spain were already effectively certain of their spot at next summer’s tournament but made sure with a 2-2 home draw against Turkiye.
Cucurella assisted Dani Olmo’s early opener with a driven cross the Barcelona attacker converted, but Turkiye surprised the hosts to lead before the hour mark in Seville. Mikel Oyarzabal levelled soon after to ensure Spain avoided a rare defeat. They will now set their sights on lifting the World Cup for the first time since 2010.
Elsewhere in World Cup qualifying, Filip Jorgensen was an unused sub as 10-man Denmark dramatically lost 4-2 away to Scotland. The Scots scored twice in stoppage time to secure the victory and leapfrog Denmark into first place.
The Danes will now enter a play-off next March to see if they will compete at next summer’s showpiece in North America.
In a friendly in Lille, Estevao Willian played the full game and scored a penalty as Brazil and Tunisia played out a 1-1 draw.
Tunisia went ahead courtesy of Hazem Mastouri midway through the first half, but Estevao coolly levelled from the spot before the break, firing his penalty into the top right-hand corner. It was his fifth international goal in 11 senior appearances.
Sub Lucas Paqueta missed a spot-kick for Brazil in the second half and Estevao very nearly won it with the last kick, clipping the outside of the post with a right-footed shot.
Earlier on Tuesday, there was plenty of Chelsea representation across several England youth teams.
Josh Acheampong, Tyrique George and Jamie Gittens all started for England Under-21s as they maintained their flawless start to qualifying for the 2027 European Championships.
They won 4-0 against Slovakia in Presov, with Gittens and Acheampong completing the 90 minutes and George replaced by Lewis Hall on the hour.
Gittens and George combined for the opener, with the latter’s cross hooked into the six-yard box by George, allowing Divin Mubama to head home.
England were entirely dominant against the hosts of Euro 2025 – a tournament won by Lee Carsley’s Young Lions - and added further goals after the break through Ethan Nwaneri, Joshua King and Mubama again.
England have five wins from five having scored 13 goals and not conceded yet. They are two points clear of Slovakia atop Group D with a game in hand.
Reggie Walsh and Chizaram Ezenwata’s time at the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar came to an end as England lost 4-0 to Austria in the Round of 16.
All the goals were scored in the second half, and three after England had been reduced to ten men in the 50th minute. Walsh came off the bench shortly after that, while Ezenwata remained unused.
England Under-19s finished the first stage of their Euro 2026 qualifying campaign with a third successive win and two Chelsea youngsters again coming to the fore.
Will Antwi’s side beat Scotland 4-0 with the opening two goals scored by Shumaira Mheuka in a five-minute period in the first half. The striker gobbled up the rebound after fellow Blue Jesse Derry had an effort blocked on the line, and then converted Derry’s centre from close range.
Chris Rigg of Sunderland added a third on the hour when Derry’s cross wasn’t fully cleared, and England grabbed a late fourth shortly after Derry was withdrawn. Mhueka finished this camp with four goals in two games, and Derry three in three.
At Under-17 level, England drew 1-1 with Australia, drawing level when Mathis Eboue’s dangerous free-kick was headed home by Jacob Howard of Leeds.
Eboue completed the full game while Calvin Diakite was introduced off the bench.
