Alyssa Thompson played for the USA as they returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Portugal.
Beaten by the same team on Thursday, the USWNT exacted revenge with two goals early on and then one near the end. Thompson was withdrawn midway through the second half while Catarina Macario was an unused substitute.
As in their loss to Portugal earlier in the week, the USWNT struck inside the first 60 seconds. This time, Olivia Moultrie steered a controlled effort into the bottom left-hand corner.
Jessica Silva equalised with a header in the fifth minute, but the USWNT restored their lead on 10 minutes when Moultrie repeated the trick, finding the same corner with another pinpoint left-footed finish.
Thompson, who played on the left wing, came close to adding a third for the hosts before half-time, seeing a well-struck effort blocked by the Portuguese defence.
They thwarted Thompson early in the second half, too, with the USWNT well on top in East Hartford, Connecticut. That was Thompson’s last act of note as she was withdrawn in the 69th minute.
The USWNT made sure of the win when Portland Thorns’ midfielder Sam Coffey scored from a corner in the 82nd minute. They are next in action on Wednesday against New Zealand.
