It was a successful day for three of our young goalkeepers in European Under-21 Championship qualifiers, while five Blues featured for England’s Under-19s.

Lucas Bergstrom helped Finland U21s to a vital 2-0 success against Romania. The goalkeeper saved each of Romania’s four on-target attempts, while a goal in each half at the other end moves the Fins above Romania in Group E.

Finland’s fate will be in their own hands when the group reaches a conclusion next month. They travel to Switzerland and then host Montenegro knowing two wins will guarantee them top spot and a place at next summer’s Under-21 Euros.

Filip Jorgensen was in goal for Denmark U21s as they thrashed Czechia 5-0. The keeper, pictured top playing for Denmark U21s last year, was replaced with 11 minutes remaining.

That result keeps Denmark ahead of Wales in Group I on head-to-head record after the Welsh won 2-1 in Iceland. Eddie Beach was solid between the posts as a Joel Cotterill brace put the visitors in control, with Beach’s goal only breached in the third minute of stoppage time.

Wales hold a five-point lead over Iceland in third with two group games remaining. If they can better Denmark’s results next month they will leapfrog them and qualify for the Euros automatically.

Lesley Ugochukwu was an unused sub for France’s Under-21s as they beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 to stay in the hunt in Group H.

At Under-19 level, Josh Acheampong, Reiss Denny, Kiano Dyer and Harrison Murray-Campbell all started for England as they were beaten 3-2 by Germany in the final game of a camp in Croatia.

Denny and Murray-Campbell were withdrawn midway through the second half with the score 1-1. Tyrique George came on for the final quarter-of-an-hour while Ishe Samuels-Smith was an unused sub.

Harry McGlinchey came on for the final 20 minutes of Ireland Under-19s’ 1-1 draw with Slovenia on Tuesday morning. The left-back’s introduction off the bench followed Ireland’s equaliser from Mason Melia, and 1-1 was how it would end.

Leo Cardoso played the second half of Portugal U19s' 2-0 loss to Serbia, but their victory in the Stevan Vilotic Cele 2024 tournament had already been achieved.
