As their participation in September’s special night is confirmed, two who were there give their account of capturing the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup…

As we celebrate the silver anniversary of Chelsea winning the second European trophy in our history, we are very pleased to confirm that two of the stars of that victorious cup campaign are joining the growing squad of Chelsea Legends that will take on Bayern Munich Legends at Stamford Bridge on 9 September.

Elegant defender Frank Leboeuf and skilful striker Tore Andre Flo are the pair who are added to names like John Terry, Gianfranco Zola, Michael Essien, Claude Makelele, Carlo Cudicini and more to be announced, with the Chelsea side to be managed by Roberto Di Matteo, as was our team that beat Bayern in the Champions League final in 2012.

However, there were earlier Chelsea triumphs on the continental stage and Leboeuf and Flo have been helping us with their own words to recall the Cup Winners’ Cup win from 25 years ago, as well as looking forward to their Legends return, a match which is a tribute to the late Gianluca Vialli, who was their manager in Sweden that night.

Returning to the Bridge to play again for Chelsea Legends

Tore Andre Flo
I will always be Chelsea, so it will always be nice to come back for me. I am proud to have played for the club and worked for the club. I have had hip operations so I am probably not the quickest anymore! But I do still love to train and I will go out on the football pitch more often now and get my fitness back and my skills back.

Frank Leboeuf
I’m coming back to my best and I think Thiago Silva has to be very careful because I'm back in business. I’m kidding, but I’ll try to get fit and there will be some young lads like John Terry who can play more than us.

You have to share what you have felt through generations and the 2012 team winning the Champions League was obviously fantastic, but it's cool that nobody forgets what happened before.

Playing the game in memory of Luca Vialli

Frank Leboeuf
Whenever I see in my head Gianluca’s face, I have tears. He was too young. We're going to be on the pitch thinking about him and he will always be remembered as a fantastic guy.

Tore Andre Flo
I think it is a very beautiful thing to do and I am glad I can take part in this.

How the Cup Winners' Cup was won...

Tore Andre Flo
I had just joined Chelsea and as the season started we did really well and showed that we could beat any team. As this season and this competition went on, we believed more and more that we could go all the way.

Frank Leboeuf
The team was getting better and better and the ambitions of winning everything was there, but we were really at the basics of the new era, signing some new players and winning the FA Cup. Before the Cup Winners’ Cup final we won the League Cup so the club was becoming very successful, but we didn't know where we were going to end.

The early rounds

Frank Leboeuf
Tromso in the snow was pretty funny. We couldn't see the lines and we had to stop the game three times. On arrival the plane landing on the snow was scary, and we had the daylight for only four or five hours. In second half we couldn't play and I didn't know why the game has not been cancelled, probably because of the schedule.

I went for a header with the striker and he hit me with his head so I was on the floor. He came to me with snow in his hand and said do you need some ice. That was really funny. I went off but they would not allow my substitute to come on and that is when Tromso scored the third goal. But it was a great game from Gianluca. Scoring two goals in the snow was impressive from an Italian guy.

Tore Andre Flo
In Tromso they are very proud of that game because they beat Chelsea and I was there recently and they still have a big photo of the game in the players’ tunnel. It was not normal to have snow like that when games are being, even there, but it was not as surprising for the Norwegians as it was for the English guys.

Real Betis away was one of the best games for me at Chelsea. I scored two goals very early on in the game. We looked at it as a very difficult away game. They were reckoned to be a very good team at the time we played them.

Frank Leboeuf
Tore was absolutely fantastic away against Real Betis and it's a very good memory for myself too. John Toshack who was manager of Real Madrid saw the game and wanted to sign me for Real Madrid.

The home game in the next round against Vicenza was absolutely crazy and the atmosphere, oh my god, I still have goose bumps.

The build-up to the final against Stuttgart

Tore Andre Flo
I remember Gianfranco Zola and Dennis Wise were coming back from injuries and we did not know the starting line-up until the day of the game so we were on edge, all of us. It was great for me to be named to start a European final.

The mood was confident, it was a very good mood among the players and the whole club was kind of on its way up and forward at that time. The supporters were really happy, the team were performing well, in the dressing room it was a great atmosphere and we had confidence. A perfect kind of build-up for us.

Frank Leboeuf
I remember seeing the awful grass that we played on, that was horrible. A final should never be played on a pitch like that.

But when we came out we realised that the Chelsea fans were so loud it would be like we are playing at home. We were upset with the pitch but otherwise, we felt that we had the fans with us, that it was for us. If we were serious, nothing would happen to us to stop us winning.

Tore Andre Flo
It was a crowd that really appreciated what we did. I felt that it was the beginning of the great Chelsea in that period and everybody was so happy about everything we did. It was a great time to be a player and I think it was a great time to be a supporter. I have spoken to many of them after and they really enjoyed that time.

The match

Tore Andre Flo
I felt we played a very good game. We were the team that had the most and really played well. The only thing that was missing was the goal, and that was fixed by Zola!

Frank Leboeuf
I remember some actions when it was tough. A good free-kick for them I gave just before the end of the game when I put my foot too high, but mostly I just remember Gianfranco coming on.

We were very strong at the back, as always during a final. I played five finals with Chelsea and we never conceded a goal. We were very focused on what we had to do defensively and because of the artists we had up front, it happened what had to happen - victory.

The substitution and 17 seconds later…

Frank Leboeuf
Gianfranco was so upset because he was not playing that he was on fire when he came on, and he put that screamer into the top corner and we won.

Tore Andre Flo
Those two who were a bit doubtful with injury were the ones who did it as Dennis did the assist. Two big names of Chelsea history.

Gianfranco came on for me. A very good substitution that! I saw the goal and I was incredibly happy because I felt that we were a team, a unit, and we were all happy for each other. The goal was amazing. I felt I had played a really good game but it was Gianfranco Zola who was coming on so that is something I knew would happen, however well you’d played.

The celebrations

Tore Andre Flo
We went around with the trophy. When I see the photos I remember it all. The good thing about winning a European cup is that it is the last game of the season and there is a holiday after and it is such a good feeling to know you have won a big trophy and you can enjoy a holiday. What a great feeling to finish a tough, long season like that. I went to my home in Norway for a few days which was very nice.

Frank Leboeuf
I remember that we didn't party, that we went back to London, and then we flew off to play some friendlies.

Up there as one of the best days

Tore Andre Flo
Definitely. To win a cup like that early in my Chelsea days, that is something you remember for life.

Frank Leboeuf
I saw the pictures and I remember the atmosphere. It was very special but it went too fast. It's only when you retire you say oh my god, we did that! And that's awesome. It's when I see my team-mates from Chelsea I have so much respect for them because of what we achieved together, it's absolutely fantastic. It's a great memory.
