On his first Champions League start for Chelsea, Jamie Gittens caught the eye with an excellent display in our 5-1 win over Ajax. As he explained afterwards, it epitomised an enjoyable start to his Blues career.
Nobody completed more take-ons than the three Gittens managed and at 21 years and 75 days old, he became the youngest Chelsea player on record (since 2003/04) to create five chances in a Champions League game, beating a record set by Eden Hazard in September 2012.
Gittens received the UEFA Player of the Match prize after full-time, and he reflected on a positive night’s work and his own development.
‘It was a good performance from me and the whole team,’ said Gittens.
‘We played well, we dominated the game and we got the three points. I’m still getting the hang of things, trying to adapt in a new team and a new style of play, but it’s going well and I’m pleased right now.’
The 21-year-old was part of a youthful Chelsea starting XI last night – it was the youngest in this season’s Champions League, and the second youngest ever named by an English side in the competition.
Gittens has felt right at home since joining from Borussia Dortmund over the summer.
‘It’s a young group, such good people, everyone is good to be around on and off the pitch. It’s a good time right now.
‘It’s such a good team, everyone is working hard in training, everyone is so fun to play with, so for me it’s so positive to be around.’
