Chelsea FC Women’s Jess Carter has claimed that a combination of adrenaline and motivation will be key as the Blues search for a third consecutive Barclays FA Women’s Super League title.
If Emma Hayes’ side win our remaining two league fixtures, the Blues will be crowned WSL champions for the third year in a row following a tight race to the top with Arsenal.
The first of those two fixtures start today with a trip to the Midlands to take on Birmingham City, before we host Manchester United at Kingsmeadow on the final day of the season.
It’s a quick turnaround for Hayes's side, who have recorded two victories over Tottenham Hotspur in the past seven days, most recently at Kingsmeadow on Thursday evening.
Speaking on the win against Spurs, Carter said: ‘It was massive! Obviously it was a tough game, it’s been a tough week so for us to manage to get three points out of that was really important and it’s just a great step in the right direction.’
Our No.7 says the team are in a good place as we edge closer to the final two league fixtures of the campaign, adding: ‘We’re quite confident. We’re in a good place right now but we’re well aware that we’ve still got two tough games and the pressure is on because we have to win them both.
‘We’re well aware that they are two very different opponents but we’ve got to be on our A-game to be able to get three points from both games.’
Carter will be facing her former team this evening, however won’t be holding back on the pitch.
‘It’s been quite a while now since I’ve been at Birmingham,' she continued. 'As much love and respect I have for the club, it’s been a long time and a lot of people have moved on from when I was at the club so I don’t have as many ties to Birmingham as I used to. Hopefully it will be a good game.’
The England international is expecting a tough game in the Midlands this evening.
‘We’re expecting them to be organised and tough to break down,' she admitted. 'I think they’ll be quite direct in transition so we’ve got to make sure that we’re switched on from the get-go because I think they can still punish us given the opportunity.’
With the games coming thick and fast for the Blues recently, Carter explains what has been getting us through the congested fixture list.
‘One it’s adrenaline, and two it’s motivation,' she added. 'We want to win titles and it’s that motivation to keep going, knowing that if we get six points in these next two games then we can win the league so we’re all very motivated to do that. I think that’s probably the main factor, knowing that if we perform and get results then we can win the league.’
On what it would mean to win a third consecutive league title, Carter added: ‘It would be a bit crazy! I don’t know how many times it’s happened before, if ever, so I think that’s going to be huge and it’s really exciting.
'It’ll only make it matter even more this year because I think this has been one of the toughest years yet in the league. It will be a really memorable trophy to win.’
The defender also heaped praise on the Chelsea faithful who have travelled up and down the country to support the team this season.
‘Our fans have been crazy this year,' she stated. 'They’ve been phenomenal. Their support has been amazing, we hear them every week and every game so the support is going to be just as important on Sunday as it has been this whole season. we’re going to really need their help over the next few games to really push us over the edge.’
