Once the Club World Cup trophy had been lifted and the celebrations had moved into the Chelsea changing room at MetLife Stadium, Joao Pedro had a phone call to make.

Two weeks earlier, the 23-year-old had been on holiday in his native Brazil. Now, after two goals in our semi-final victory over Fluminense and another in the final against Paris Saint-Germain, he was a world champion.

And with his winner's medal dangling from his neck, Joao Pedro called his mother, Flavia. Without her support, he wouldn't be a Chelsea player – he perhaps wouldn't be a professional at all.

He said: 'My family means everything to me, especially my mother, because I had difficult moments at the beginning of my career and she was there for me. If she hadn't been by my side from the beginning, I don't think I would have got this far.

'So the first thing I did when arriving back into the changing room was to call her because she is very important to me and I know how happy she is that we have won this title.'

It was on July 2 that Joao Pedro joined the Blues from Brighton and Hove Albion. Within a week, he had made his debut, been handed his first start, and scored two stunning goals. Another followed in the final; time to acclimatise to his new surroundings was not required.

He puts that down to the support of his new team-mates, and the mentality that has been forged within Enzo Maresca's squad.

He said: ‘I’m very happy because I was on holiday and they called me to come to my tournament, and in Brazil, this tournament is very important. I think you saw in the final how important it was to everyone at Chelsea.

'It is a very good group with very good guys. Everyone wants to win; the mentality is good. Everyone has been very welcoming to me.

'I came to Chelsea to win trophies, and today we did. Now we need to rest and it will be time to go again next season. But will enjoy it first because we won the tournament.'

The Blues were not favourites heading into Sunday's final. Paris Saint-Germain had won the Champions League in May and had beaten Real Madrid convincingly in the semi-finals.

But Maresca's side produced a near-flawless display against the European champions and more than deserved our 3-0 victory, courtesy of two Cole Palmer goals and a strike from Joao Pedro.

The Brazil international knew the final would be tough, but he and his team-mates believed the Blues could overcome the Parisians.

‘PSG have won the Champions League, they have a great team, but we know our power as well,’ he added. ‘We have a great team as well, and we just needed to play the game, and in the end, we’re happy to win.
