We started well in Italy as Enzo Fernandez converted from the spot, but the Blues had to weather a storm from the home side after they scored twice to lead at the break. However, a truly special second-half display was to come, as Joao Pedro converted a brace with two incredible strikes.

The Brazilian was overjoyed after the contest, describing it as a ‘dream’ team performance at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, and Joao Pedro is convinced this only the start.

‘This feels very important, for us, for the fans, for everyone,’ he began, speaking after the game. ‘We are a top club, and this will give us more confidence.

‘I think it was a "dream" game. The whole team has worked hard every day to put on the pitch what the gaffer wants.

‘I think everyone tried to help each other. The team has given me a lot of confidence, and I try my best always. Let’s try to work hard to be consistent, and I’m very happy to score two goals. Now we need to work hard.’

Describing his pair of strikes, Joao Pedro pointed to his special connection with Cole Palmer on the pitch, particularly during the Brazilian’s second.

He continued: ‘For the first goal I knew I had more space, I could turn and when I saw the space, I just tried to hit the target. For the second, I knew Cole was with me to run into the space and it was a great combination.

‘The second half of the game was more open. Cole is a brilliant player when he is on the pitch - he is a special player. I’m always happy to play with him, and he’s a very important player.’

Joao Pedro is now targeting more success during the second half of the season, with a tie in the final 16 of the Champions League to come.

‘I always try to do my best,’ he added. ‘I’m very happy to get these goals. My team-mates also expect that from me.

‘When you start winning more games, you can gain more confidence in each other, and now we need to rest and be positive. We are in the next round and now we need to rest and now focus on the Premier League.’
