Joao Pedro believes the Blues were able to showcase our ‘power’ with ten men against Premier League leaders Arsenal to earn a 1-1 draw and ‘positive point’ at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea were the better side for 30 minutes against our visitors from north London. We fashioned chances to break the deadlock while restricting the Gunners’ threat. Then came a defining moment in the game.
A challenge in the 34th minute from Moises Caicedo on Mikel Merino saw the Blues midfielder, following a VAR review, sent off. The dynamics of the contest changed in an instant.
Yet the Blues didn’t wilt. We battled hard, worked intently across the pitch, and broke the deadlock shortly into the second period when Trevoh Chalobah flicked home a corner from captain Reece James.
And while it wasn’t an advantage we could hold on to until the final whistle - Merino headed home an equaliser on the hour mark - Joao Pedro believes our response to adversity highlights the quality and resolve within the Chelsea squad.
He said: ‘We are Chelsea and we have good players. So when we have the ball [even with ten men], we try to do something with it and show our power.
‘I think we played a great game. If you watch the first 30 minutes, with eleven players, we dominated the game and they didn’t create [any chances].
‘With a player less, it’s always tough but we were still able to score the first goal. Of course, against Arsenal, it’s always difficult, and with a player less than them we conceded the equaliser. But it was a positive point for us and we showed our commitment and quality.’
Arsenal were not able to pepper the Chelsea goal despite their man advantage. We defended well and forced the Gunners to attempt efforts from the edge of our penalty area.
When those were headed for the bottom corners, Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez displayed his excellent reactions and flexibility to save impressively, denying Gabriel Martinelli in the first half and Merino late in the second.
‘Rob always tries to save us and today he was brilliant again,' said our Brazilian forward. ‘He was very important for us, but the whole team had a very good performance.’
While a point wasn’t what the Blues wanted coming into the game, it puts us in third in the Premier League table after 13 matches. And it bookends a week in which we have won on the road at Burnley, beaten Barcelona at the Bridge in the Champions League, and battled hard for a point against the current top-flight leaders.
‘It was a great week but we have to continue because the competitions don’t stop here,’ said Joao Pedro. They continue, so have to continue like this too.’
