Goalscorer Johanna Rytting Kaneryd was frustrated to concede a late equaliser to London City Lionesses, but believes the Blues can take learnings from yesterday’s 1-1 draw into Tuesday’s huge Women’s Champions League quarter-final with Arsenal.
It was a WSL contest that saw the Blues put under pressure despite taking an early lead – Rytting Kaneryd had fired home Aggie Beever-Jones’ headed through ball after just 22 minutes. However, the home side grew in confidence, particularly towards the end of the second half, and eventually levelled the score to our disappointment, meaning the points were shared at the Den.
Although frustrated with the outcome, the Swede stressed that it won’t affect preparations for next week’s Champions League clash against the Gunners, instead highlighting the importance of learning from the tough encounter with London City.
‘I think we started the game very well, and I’m pleased that I could score that goal in the first half,’ Johanna opened.
‘ I felt like we had control of the game, and then obviously they got the goal. It was a lot of second balls, a lot of duels, and it was a physical game today, but we're obviously disappointed not getting those three points.
‘It’s a tough schedule at the moment. It’s all about recovery and looking forward. We will take what we need from this game into the next one, and it’s a really important one [against Arsenal]. I feel like we have a really strong squad, and it’s about preparing in the best way for Tuesday’s game.’
Rytting Kaneryd also wanted to point out the pivotal contribution that fellow forward Beever-Jones had made during the build-up to our opener.
‘I know Aggie really well,’ she continued. ‘I think you can hear her screaming 30 seconds before to run in behind. It was all about Aggie winning the duel and flicking the ball on. It was a great assist and really nice to score for the confidence.’
