It’s been a great year so far for Johanna Rytting Kaneryd. Coming off the back of a domestic Treble-winning season, the 28-year-old has just penned a new deal that will keep her with us until the summer of 2027.

Now, thoughts turn to international duty. Rytting Kaneryd is a key figure for her country, having featured in every match at the 2023 World Cup, a tournament that saw Sweden earn a third-place finish.

In 2024, the winger scooped the Diamond Ball, the highest accolade in Swedish football, describing that award as ‘probably one of the biggest things that has happened in my life’.

On Thursday night, Sweden's last warm-up game comes against a Norway whose squad includes Guro Reiten and then after the opening two matches of the tournament versus Denmark and Poland, Rytting Kaneryd faces a potential reunion with Chelsea team-mate Sjoeke Nusken when the Swedes face Germany in their final group game.

When we sat down with Jojo at the end of the domestic campaign, she was already prepared for the possibility of facing fellow Blues.

‘It’s special when you go up against your club team-mates at a tournament,’ she said. ‘It's definitely different. You train with the girls every day, and then suddenly, you’re playing against each other.

‘It's a weird one, but at the same time, I’m used to it. On the pitch, you’re one person, then off the pitch, you're not the same.’

Rytting Kaneryd describes a process of compartmentalisation, blocking out any club relationships for the duration of the 90 minutes. The full-time whistle breaks that spell, returning everything to how it was.

And while the messages between the Chelsea players are normally free-flowing, a European tournament leaves communication between players unusually muted.

‘During the game, you don't really think, you just play,’ she continues. ‘Everyone is the same, as soon as the referee blows the whistle, you can relax. You can be friends again.

‘I don’t think there will be much in the Chelsea group chat; it will be super quiet. Maybe the quietest it’s ever been.’
