Nearly a week after opening his Chelsea account with a goal at Nottingham Forest, Josh Acheampong still can’t wipe the smile off his face.
The Academy graduate thumped in a close-range header to put us 1-0 up at the City Ground. There were wonderful scenes of celebration on and off the pitch, and the day got even better for the defender as we secured the points.
‘Scoring a Premier League goal is something I have dreamed of,’ says Acheampong. ‘As a defender, I don’t score many goals, so when I do, it’s always a really good feeling.
'The cross from Pedro [Neto] was so perfect that I didn't even have time to think about it! It literally just hit my head and then it was in the back of the net!
‘We worked on set-pieces the day before and I actually scored a header. Bernardo [Cueva], the set-piece coach, was saying, "You're going to score today", so I kind of felt it and was just happy it came.
‘As soon as I scored, Reece pushed me to the fans, but I just wanted to make sure that we got the win before I celebrated too much, to be honest. Winning made it more special.’
There was further excitement when Acheampong got off the pitch and switched on his phone.
‘It was mad! Everyone was really supportive and really happy for me, so it was good!’
Acheampong’s maiden senior goal in blue is another step forward in his rapid development.
The England youth international has already accumulated more Premier League minutes this season than he did in the entirety of last, testament to Enzo Maresca’s faith in him.
After a breakout campaign in which he mostly featured in the Conference League, Acheampong is understanding the English top flight better with each passing week. That will help him as we prepare for the visit of Sunderland on Saturday.
‘The Premier League is a new challenge, a bit different to the Conference League. Being ready in training and getting prepared for the games is what I'm working on at the moment.
‘Sunderland are a good team and every game in the Premier League is a hard game. So we just have to go into the game with the same mentality to try and win.’
