Kadeisha Buchanan has committed her future to Chelsea by signing a contract extension which will keep the defender at the club until the summer of 2027.
The 29-year-old joined the Blues in 2022 after a trophy-laden five-and-a-half years in France with Lyon. Lifting silverware continued upon her move to London, having won two Women’s Super League titles and an FA Cup to date.
On putting pen to paper, Buchanan said: ‘I am really excited to have extended my contract here at Chelsea.
‘The club has turned into family, and I feel settled in the country and the league as well. I can’t wait to get back out there with the team to achieve what we aim to accomplish every single season and more.’
Head of women’s football Paul Green added: ‘We are delighted Kadeisha has extended her deal with the club. Kadeisha was showing some of the best form of her Chelsea career prior to her injury this season and we look forwarding to seeing her return to action next season.’
A maiden season with the Blues saw Buchanan feature on 28 occasions, with the campaign ending with the defender lifting her first WSL and FA Cup trophies.
Last season, the Canadian continued to play her part by making 20 appearances in all competitions. She scored her first goal for Chelsea – a header – in a 3-0 league win against Aston Villa.
Her second term at the club was again a campaign which ended with another WSL title.
The 2024/25 campaign saw Buchanan reunite with Sonia Bompastor, who was her head coach in her final season at Lyon.
And the defender was a standout performer during the first half of the season and reached an impressive milestone of 50 appearances for Chelsea in a 2-1 win over rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
However, her campaign was cruelly cut short as she sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in November in a WSL encounter with Liverpool.
Before joining Chelsea, the centre-back had already proven herself to be one of the best defenders in Europe. She won five UEFA Champions League titles at Lyon and eight domestic trophies, including five French league titles.
She has continued to impress on the international stage since making her debut for Canada at only 18 years old. Buchanan has been named Canada’s Player of the Year on three occasions and won Olympic gold in 2021.
There have been several individual accolades which have acknowledged Buchanan’s form over the years, with her winning the Young Player Award at the 2015 World Cup and previously being named in the FIFPRO World XI and nominated for the prestigious The Best FIFA Women’s Player award.
Everyone at Chelsea sends their congratulations to Kadeisha and we wish her every success for the forthcoming years in blue.
