Defender Kadeisha Buchanan doesn’t often have the chance to celebrate scoring a goal, and the delight was written all over her face when she netted our second against Roma in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Wednesday evening.

After battling through the first half, we took the lead just after the interval courtesy of a close-range effort from Ellie Carpenter. And it was Buchanan who finally put the game to bed with a header from a Wieke Kaptein corner two minutes from time.

The Canadian has started nine times this season and, while delighted with our unbeaten start to the campaign, believes there are still some improvements to be made.

‘I'm happy with how I played and I got a goal, so I'm really excited,’ she beamed afterwards. 'When we came out in the second half, the team really upped the energy, and we got two goals from that, so it was good. Good first half, but excellent second half.

‘We're getting really good chances in the first half, so I don’t want to discredit how we're doing, but I think we can definitely start stronger. Because if you see when you start strong in the second half, and you get the goals, I think we just need to keep doing that.’

Roma only had three shots on goal in the entire match, but had a chance to equalise in the 78th minute when Alayah Pilgrim curled an attempt just wide of Hannah Hampton’s right-hand post.

Buchanan netted just ten minutes after that chance, allowing everyone in the stadium to breathe a sigh of relief that we had that all-important two-goal cushion. ‘That’s why I'm grateful to get the goal,’ the defender explained. ‘And Wieke was there with the good assist, too.’

The win means Chelsea broke a Women’s Champions League record, having gone unbeaten in our last 27 league phase/group stage fixtures. And this season we have accumulated seven points in three games without conceding a single goal, including a tough trip to eight-time competition winners Lyon.

‘We should be very happy with where we are,’ affirmed Buchanan.

‘No losses. We’ve played against Lyon, and that draw was a really good result away. And with three points here, I think we're doing the best we can, and we're in good shape to keep doing what we do.’
