Keira Walsh is the next Chelsea player to answer our questions about some of her earliest football memories…

The midfielder started out in the Blackburn academy before joining Manchester City as a 17-year-old, quickly earning a berth in their senior team. After eight successful seasons in the North-West, she signed for Barcelona in 2022, before making the move to Chelsea at the start of this year – quickly winning a domestic treble.

We caught up with Walsh before she headed off on international duty with England to find out more about her footballing firsts…

What was the first football match you watched live?

It was when Man City played Arsenal and Adebayor ran the whole length of the pitch.

Who was your first football hero?

My first real hero was probably David Silva.

What were your first football boots?

Nike, maybe the Ronaldinho ones that had the tongue with the Velcro on.

First football kit that you had?

Man City - the one I remember is the one that was like white with the black and red stripe diagonal, with First Advice as the sponsor.

First coach?

It was Chris Burnham.

Which club?

It was just a local team that I played in when I was in primary school.

Your first best friend in football?

It was his son, Oliver Burnham. He was my first best friend and we played football together.

What was your first professional game?

It was Notts County away for Man City. I started the game in the 8 and 10, and they pushed me back into the 6 where I play now.

First professional goal?

I don’t know! The first one I remember was the one I scored in the Champions League with Man City against Brondby.

First piece of good advice that you remember being given?

I think most of the coaching points Nick Cushing gave me when I was a kid. I think it was just probably full speed and how to pass the ball properly and make sure I’m passing to the back foot.

First time you were recognised in public?

Ah I don’t remember! Maybe a little bit before we won the Euros. Probably at Jill Scott’s coffee shop, I would say!
