Having started every game for England in their 2022 European Championship victory, Chelsea midfielder Keira Walsh has once again been an ever-present in Sarina Wiegman’s starting line-up during Euro 2025.
Her experience at the highest level is just as valuable to the side as her obvious quality in midfield, as she faces a third major tournament final in a row wearing an England shirt.
On Sunday, Walsh will face plenty of familiar opponents, having spent two-and-a-half seasons playing in the Spanish top-flight with Barcelona before joining Chelsea in January 2025. Yet that will not faze her, and she explained exactly why England are full of belief ahead of the final in Basel.
‘The girls are in very good spirits, she said. ‘The way we did it, I think it brings the team closer together, and we don't know when to give up.
‘We come into every tournament and want to reach the final. Maybe the way we've done it is a little bit more stressful for everyone. But the beauty of this team is that we are relentless, and we've got belief in ourselves that even in the 90th minute, we can get a goal and we can win.’
England have proven that their resilience is one of their biggest strengths, coming back from two goals down against Sweden in the quarter-finals, and scoring an equaliser against Italy deep into added time in the semi-final.
To Walsh, that bravery feels ingrained in the collective national psyche and has become part of this team’s identity.
‘Honestly, I think it's part of being English,’ she continued. ‘I think that's what we feel when we put the shirt on. It's that we give everything. We run ourselves into the ground. The beauty of this squad is that we know if we have to come off because we're tired, there's going to be someone else who can come on to finish the job.
‘As a team, we speak about that English resilience, and it's something we pride ourselves on. You can see from the last two games that it’s something we really believe in.’
After defeating Spain in the quarter-final at Euro 2022, England lost to the same opponent in the World Cup final in 2023. Now that time has passed, Walsh can identify where the Lionesses need to improve if they are going to lift the trophy on Sunday.
‘There's respect between the teams, and Spain play incredible football, but we know we do on our day as well,’ said Walsh. ‘So, yeah, I think it's going to be an exciting game and hopefully it's a good one for the fans to watch.
‘I would say from the previous times we’ve played Spain, maybe we've not been as confident as we could be on the ball. I think that's one of our strengths - we've got unbelievable players on the ball. We need to take more pride in that and keep the ball for longer periods. We're going to get chances, so it's just about taking those and being confident.’
Walsh has been a serial winner throughout her career, and the summer tournament comes off the back of a domestic Treble with Chelsea.
There’s no doubt that she is going all out to win.
‘From a personal perspective, and I can only speak for myself, is just to go out and win whether it's the first time, the second time, or the third time.
‘It's another final and I want to win it. It's almost like we're doing it all over again. It’s a different country, a different tournament and a lot of different players. For us, it feels like a fresh start, and when you play for England, you always want to win every game.
'I've also heard that people have been saying that it was luck, but I think for us, you create those moments yourself through belief, determination, and confidence.'
