Sam Kerr was the hat-trick hero as Chelsea FC Women clinched back-to-back Continental League Cup titles, but the Australian shifted the praise to her Blues teammates following yesterday’s 6-0 victory against Bristol City.

Kerr opened the scoring at Vicarage Road after just two minutes when she tapped home a Fran Kirby cross at the back post.

Minutes later Kerr grabbed her second of the afternoon when she controlled a pass from Kirby before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

Kirby then netted herself a brace in a matter of minutes ahead of the interval before she provided an assist for Kerr’s third goal and the England international was involved once again for our final goal of the afternoon as she set up Guro Reiten.

Kerr said: ‘It was a real team performance, I scored three, but Fran had a hand in every goal.

‘She has four assists and two goals, and the defence was epic too. It was a real team performance. We made five substitutions, and everyone made an impact.’

It was apparent during the opening stages of our clash with Bristol City, that Kerr and Kirby could pose a massive threat. With their movement, pace and quality on the ball, the Blues duo proved too much to handle for the Bristol City defence and speaking at full-time, Kerr revealed that linking up with Kirby was one of the reasons she joined the club.

She added: ‘She is an unbelievable talent. She is a team player and everyone has seen how good she is.

‘I get to play with her every day at training and in the games and we are only getting better with every game. She is a super talent and I feel lucky to be on her team.’

Sunday’s victory secured our first piece of silverware this season, and with Chelsea still in contention for another three competitions, Kerr insists the hard work will continue as the Blues push for more trophy success.

‘Whenever you can win a trophy, you want to win it and we did that with a strong showing.

‘It’s a real boost for the team and it’s a reward for the team.

‘We have been pushing really hard over the last few months so we are really happy with that but there is more to win.’
