Sonia Bompastor faced the media at Cobham ahead of our Women's Super League clash against Charlton on Sunday, and here are the key talking points from what the Blues head coach said.

After confirming that Lexi Potter would not feature against Charlton, Bompastor explained that the 20-year-old would likely be back in action quickly after suffering a minor knee injury in the final stages of the win against Roma.

The head coach has made full use of her substitutes to give the players the rest they need this season, and we remain unbeaten in all competitions after 12 games played.

Here are the rest of the key talking points from our head coach’s pre-match press conference on Friday.

On having multiple goalscorers this season…

'It's important. When you have that ability, your team is a little bit more unpredictable. In the different teams I have coached, in my previous club as well, we always had a lot of players involved in scoring goals.

'The way we want to perform and play, it helps to get everyone involved and take some responsibility for scoring goals. I'm happy with that because sometimes it's difficult to rely on one person. If you do have a player who is on fire and scores every week and every game, it's also positive.'

On facing Charlton…

'We come into every game really well prepared. We know in this league every game is tough, and you can lose points against anyone. We want to put in a good performance to get the three points.

'If we want to compete and stay at the top for as long as possible, we need to approach every game with a lot of respect for every opponent.'

On our strong defensive record…

'We reflected a lot after last season, and we knew exactly the things we wanted to improve. Having players performing at their best level helps a lot.

'If you look at the profiles we have in the squad, they are top-class players. That's in terms of their mentality, the desire to defend, the leadership they have, the communication they bring on the pitch, but also the quality they bring individually in winning the duels.

'It's about managing the backline and the whole team, managing the depth, the height of the block on the pitch; all these details are really well managed. We still have room for improvement, but I'm really pleased with the individual performances in the backline.'

On how Katie McCabe is settling in…

'We are really happy to have Katie with us. Her leadership on and off the pitch is unbelievable. Working with Katie is really easy.

'She always wants to work hard. She always leads by example, and you can really have honest and direct conversations with her.

'Her performances on the pitch, how she is with the team and in the environment shows she always thinks first about the team and how she can help the team to be the best.'

On half-time substitutions…

'In the last two games, I was convinced I had to change the profiles of players coming into the game. That's why against Palace, I felt on the left side, having a player like Sandy (Baltimore) who is really comfortable in tight spaces and crossing from no space, I was convinced it was the right thing to do from what I could observe in the first half.

'In the game against Roma, I was also really convinced about bringing Ellie (Carpenter) in from half-time. It's always a tough balance because sometimes if you give some more minutes to the players on the pitch in the first half, maybe they will find their feet and deliver something more efficient.

'In the second half, sometimes spaces are more open because the other team is more fatigued. But when you have quality on the bench, you also need to trust the players who can come in and impact the game.'
