Sonia Bompastor spoke to the media at Cobham this afternoon ahead of our trip to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester City in the Women's Super League on Sunday. Here are the key takeaways from the Blues head coach's press conference...
Chelsea know a victory in the East Midlands will secure Champions League football for 2026/27, while away from the pitch Millie Bright called time on her illustrious playing career earlier this week.
It was Bompastor's first press conference since that news broke and understandably she was asked about her skipper's retirement. That is where we begin our summary of today's press conference highlights and there will be more from Sonia on Millie's retirement on the Chelsea Official App and website on Friday morning...
On Millie Bright's retirement
'A legend is retiring, and I think Millie has done everything for Chelsea. She's been Chelsea through and through. You don't see that many players who are able to play for the same club for more than a decade. She's been the captain and a great leader for this team. Everyone should be thinking about celebrating her and recognising how good she was as a player and as a person and everything she brought to the women's game in England.'
On striving for consistency
'If you compare the first season I had in Chelsea and this season, the most important difference was the inconsistency this season, us not being consistent enough in terms of results. Everyone expects Chelsea to win every game but this league is really competitive but we have to make sure if you want to be champions, you have to win as many games as possible and also be able to beat the best teams in this league. So we know that and we'll try to do that for next season, but also hopefully for the games left this season.'
On attacking football
'I was really pleased to watch the Champions League game between PSG and Bayern Munich because it was just incredible. I think it was the best game I have ever seen in my life: a lot of intensity, the philosophy from both coaches, wanting to play forward, wanting to score goals. I'm very much a coach who has the same philosophy and wants to score as many goals as possible. But for sure, from my experience, I know you have to not concede if you want to go far in every competition.'
On a lack of clean sheets lately
'If you look at some of the goals we have conceded this season, most of the goals have come from transitions. We are a team who want to have the ball. We want to be dominant. We know when we have the ball we are really open, and sometimes teams hurt us in transition. If you analyse the goal we conceded on the weekend, it was a great goal. Sometimes you also need to give credit to the opponents.'
On playing Leicester
'It's tough for them right now. They are not in a really good run of games, but we need to focus on ourselves. We need to make sure we go into the game with the right mentality. Every team in this league is difficult to play against, and I'm not expecting anything different on Sunday.'
