Academy midfielder Kiano Dyer and his Chelsea Under-21s team-mates aim to return to first place in the Premier League 2 when we take on Manchester United in a top-of-the-table clash on Monday evening, which supporters can watch live on the Chelsea Official App and website.

Dyer returned to west London in January after spending the first half of the 2025/26 campaign on loan with Volendam in the Netherlands. Since coming back to Cobham and linking up again with our Under-21s again, the midfielder has made six appearances across all competitions, featuring in both the Premier League 2 and the Premier League International Cup.

The 18-year-old quickly made an impact since his return, scoring in consecutive matches during the 4-2 win against Southampton and the emphatic 5-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Kingsmeadow.

Last time out, the Blues were forced to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw with Leeds United at Cobham, despite Shumaira Mheuka finding the net alongside an own goal by the visitors. With another important league fixture approaching, the team will be aiming to return to winning ways and maintain our strong form.

Our next match is another exciting test, as we travel to face Manchester United in a highly anticipated clash, knowing a victory would see us leapfrog our opponents back to the top of the Premier League 2 table, with just two points separating the two sides going into this game.

After training ahead of the trip north, we sat down with Dyer to hear his thoughts ahead of the game.

Firstly, Kiano, how does it feel to be back at Chelsea?

'It’s been really nice to be back after a while. I definitely see Chelsea as a second home, so it felt natural coming back into the building and rejoining the squad.

'Being back with the players and staff, who I’ve known for years, is a really nice and comforting feeling.'

You’ve been at Chelsea for a long time now. How important are those relationships within the squad?

'I joined Chelsea towards the end of my Under-14s season, so I’ve known the boys for a long time. Those relationships are really important. Being close with the boys off the pitch helps us understand each other better on the pitch.

'It’s been great being back with them because we’re more than just team-mates, we’re also friends off the pitch. The relationships with the boys are really strong both on and off the pitch. It honestly feels like a family here.

'It builds chemistry and trust, which is massive in football. When we work together as a team, you can see how well we link up and the positive results that follow.

'Right now, I’m just focused on turning up every day and giving my all in training and games.'

How have you found working under Harry Hudson since returning to the Under-21s?

'The coaches have treated me really well since I came back. Harry is a really good coach and I’ve enjoyed working under him so far.

'He demands a lot from us, which I think is important to get the best out of players. He knows the strengths of the group and pushes us to go that extra step.

'You always have to be on your top game, which drives you to improve both on and off the pitch.'

What has the training environment been like since you returned?

'Training has been really intense. Everyone works hard in every session, which helps prepare us for matches.

'That intensity is important because it keeps us ready for the next test. I always think it’s important to train as if you’re going to play, because it means you’re always prepared when the opportunity comes.'

What does being part of Chelsea’s Academy demand from players?

'Chelsea gives you the right environment to develop and aim higher.

'To be a Chelsea player you need technical quality, personality and strong character. The club pushes you to reach the highest standards, not just on the pitch but off it as well. It tests you mentally too, especially with the pressure that comes with playing for a club like this.'

You scored in back-to-back matches after returning. How pleased have you been with your recent performances?

'I feel like I’ve been working really hard and it’s starting to pay off. I’ve been trying to improve my impact in the final third and it was nice to score twice in those games. Hopefully more goals will come.

'Harry has been working with me on making more forward runs into the box and being more involved in attacks. It’s nice to see the work paying off and getting my name on the score sheet.'

What are the team’s ambitions as the season progresses?

'It’s important that we give everything in every game and fight for each other to get the three points.

'The play-offs are coming up soon, so we want to keep building momentum. Hopefully we can finish top of the league and perform well in the play-offs.

'It would be great to lift a trophy at the end of the season.'

How are you approaching the upcoming match against Manchester United?

'I think I can speak for everyone in the team when I say we’re excited. Manchester United is always a big game and we want to continue our good form.

'I stick to my normal routine and don’t change anything just because it’s a big match. I stay relaxed, calm and focused in training.'

Do you enjoy playing away from home?

'I actually like away games because they’re a different experience - different crowds, pitches and environments. It’s exciting.

'Travelling together also helps us bond as a team and brings us closer together, which really helps over the course of the season.'

Finally, what are you hoping to see from your own performance in this match?

'I want to put in a strong performance and help the team however I can. If I’m lucky enough to score then that would be great, but the most important thing is bringing the three points back to Cobham and delivering a positive performance away from home.'
