Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is relishing the competition for places within the Chelsea squad after helping the Blues secure a place in the knockout stage of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The midfielder made his first appearance in the tournament against ES Tunis, featuring from the start, as goals from Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap and Tyrique George saw us overcome the Tunisian champions and set up a Round of 16 tie against Benfica.
Dewsbury-Hall was pleased to have helped the Blues qualify from Group D and appreciates that the abundance of quality within the Blues squad will only help propel the team forward during the rest of the competition and beyond.
‘We got the result we needed and it’s nice to have been able to help the team,’ the 26-year-old explained after our win in Philadelphia.
Dewsbury-Hall was deployed off the right flank against Tunis. It's a role he has previously featured in during his first campaign as a Blue, and one from which he created three chances – a joint team-high – during the 90 minutes.
Competition for places in our midfield is fierce with Andrey Santos and Dario Essugo joining a contingent that also includes Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia.
Yet Dewsbury-Hall understands and accepts the challenge of trying to cement a regular starting spot in Enzo Maresca's side.
‘It’s part and parcel of the game of being at a massive club,’ he continued. ‘You know there will be competition, but I thrive on that. If it were easy, anyone would play for this club.'
