Defender Landon Emenalo and his Chelsea Under-19s team-mates are aiming to make it three wins from three in the prestigious UEFA Youth League as they prepare to face Ajax at Cobham tomorrow afternoon.
It has been an excellent campaign so far for our Under-19s, led by Calum McFarlane, who maintain a 100 per cent record after two games. The Blues opened with a dramatic away victory at Bayern Munich, where goals from Genesis Antwi, Shumaira Mheuka and Harrison Murray-Campbell sealed a thrilling 3-2 win.
That result was followed by a dominant display at home against Benfica, as Mheuka netted a hat-trick and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and Kobe Barbour also found the target in a commanding 5-2 success.
The squad are determined to continue our good form by carrying that momentum into tomorrow’s meeting with Ajax, which you can watch live for free on the Chelsea Official App and website. The Dutch side arrive in good shape themselves, unbeaten after winning one match and drawing the other.
Ahead of the fixture, we caught up with Emenalo, who was a key figure in both Youth League outings as well as for McFarlane’s Under-21s this season, to hear his thoughts ahead of another exciting test.
Hi Landon, how are you and the squad feeling ahead of our next Youth League match against Ajax?
'I really enjoy these games and the competition as a whole. The best part is facing teams from different countries who all play in their own unique way. One week you’re up against a side that presses high and aggressively. The next you’re playing a team that sits deep and keeps the ball for long spells.
'It really forces you to think more tactically and adapt during the game. It’s unpredictable, but that’s what makes it exciting. You can’t just rely on what you’re used to - every match demands something different.'
Is there anything in particular about the competition you’ve enjoyed the most?
'Definitely the travelling. Going to places like Munich was incredible and representing the club abroad gives you a real sense of pride. You get to see how football is viewed in different countries and it makes you realise how special these opportunities are.'
Overall, how have you found the start of this 2025/26 campaign so far?
'I’ve really enjoyed it, to be honest. There have been a lot of games in a short space of time, which has been intense but also exciting.
'Focusing on the Youth League has been a completely new experience for me. It’s a different competition with different styles of football compared to what we’re used to in the league. Every match has felt like a step up, but that’s exactly what you want at this stage of your development. It pushes you to grow and adapt quickly.'
How are you feeling about your role in the squad and becoming a consistent defender?
'Last season I featured mostly in midfield, but this year I’ve dropped into defence more and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve always seen myself as someone who’s adaptable and happy to play wherever the team needs me.
'Playing at centre-back or full-back has helped me understand the game from a different perspective. It’s improved my positioning, awareness and leadership on the pitch. The more positions you can play, the more valuable you become to the team.'
You were also on the bench for the men’s first team recently against Liverpool in the Premier League. What was that experience like and what did you learn from it?
'That was surreal. To be that close to making an appearance with the senior squad, especially in a match that ended with a last-minute winner, was incredible.
'The atmosphere in the changing room afterwards was unreal. Even just being around that environment gives you so much motivation. It makes you think, “I want more of this.” It’s a reminder of what you’re working towards every day.'
Finally, what are your aims going into the game against Ajax?
'All we want is a clean sheet, three points and to enjoy it. That’s the main thing.
'We know Ajax are a top side with real quality, but we back ourselves. If we stay disciplined, play our football and stay brave on the ball, there’s no reason we can’t get the result. It’s a big occasion, but these are the games you want to be involved in.'
