For the fourth time in five league meetings, Chelsea left it very late to score the decisive goal which extended our long winning steak against Crystal Palace.
The Blues set a new club record on Monday when we came from behind to win 3-1 and record our 13th consecutive Premier League victory against the Eagles, courtesy of stoppage-time strikes by Conor Gallagher and Enzo Fernandez.
Palace have not avoided defeat against Chelsea since October 2017 but it looked they might have done enough to end their long barren run until former Eagles loanee Gallagher came back to haunt his former club with his second goal of the night five seconds into added time.
Enzo’s coolly taken finish three minutes later sealed another excellent derby outing for the Blues who have made a habit of conjuring late winners against the Eagles in recent times.
Just a month-and-a-half ago, we equalled our club record of a dozen consecutive league wins against West Bromwich Albion (set from 1989 to 2011) with victory over Palace thanks to a late penalty by Noni Madueke at Stamford Bridge.
After being brought down in the box by Eberechi Eze, the 21-year-old showed tremendous composure to send Dean Henderson the wrong way with his 89th minute spot kick as we secured a 2-1 victory.
Gallagher was Palace’s Player of the Year in 2021/22 but the 24-year-old has not given their fans too much to smile about when he has returned to south London in the past two seasons.
In our visit to Selhurst in October 2022, he was applauded by the home supporters when he came on as a late substitute for Kai Havertz.
However, he quickly went from a hero to a villain in their eyes when he received the ball from Christian Pulisic on the left edge of the Palace box in the final minute and curled home a magnificent right-footed strike past the fingertips of Vicente Guaita into the top corner of the net.
That win came eight months after our previous away win against Palace in February 2022 when we needed a late intervention from Hakim Ziyech to keep the winning run alive.
With the game goalless after 89 minutes, Marcos Alonso sent a deep cross from the left flank towards the far post where the Moroccan found himself completely unattended as he sent a low volley between the legs of Jack Butland for the decisive goal.
