With our first game against Charlton Athletic in nearly two decades fast approaching, we have delved into the archives and dug out a selection of highlights from previous meetings with the Addicks.

It was in February 2007 that we most recently faced the south London side, that game won 1-0 courtesy of a Frank Lampard goal. It proved the last of Charlton’s eight seasons in the Premier League, with the Addicks bouncing between the Championship and League One since.

All our choices for the best Chelsea moment against Charlton come from those Premier League meetings. To stir your memory, we have compiled them together in a video and provided more background on each below our poll - where you can choose your favourite!

Poyet wins it late – October 1998

In the very first Premier League meeting between the clubs, it needed a dramatic 88th-minute winner from Gus Poyet to ensure Chelsea emerged victorious. Eddie Youds equalised Frank Leboeuf’s first-half penalty before Poyet popped up with a towering header to send most of Stamford Bridge home happy.

Captain JT – December 2001

The game is best forgotten – Charlton won 1-0 at the Bridge – but the occasion will always hold a place in our history, for it was the first time John Terry captained Chelsea from the start. JT was a couple of days shy of his 21st birthday when he led the Blues out in Marcel Desailly’s absence.

Lampard’s late winner crowns comeback – August 2002

The opening day of the 2002/03 season did not begin well for Claudio Ranieri’s Blues as the Addicks raced into a two-goal lead at the Valley. However, fine goals from Gianfranco Zola and substitute Carlton Cole drew us level before Frank Lampard popped up with the winner a minute from time, completing a cracking comeback in the process.

Stamford Beach – January 2003

Charlton were our opponents for the infamous ‘Stamford Beach’ game at the start of 2003. Our pitch was heavily sanded with barely a blade of grass in sight, but the Blues adapted to the conditions better to run out 4-1 winners. Despite the Addicks lodging a formal complaint and demanding a replay, the result stood.

JT’s Valley brace – November 2004

The highlight of this commanding 4-0 victory – our biggest Premier League win against Charlton – was a quickfire John Terry brace in front of the travelling Blues fans.

When Makelele scored! – May 2005

We had broken records galore en route to our maiden Premier League triumph in 2004/05. But one thing was missing – a Claude Makelele goal! That all changed in our final home game as a last-minute penalty was handed to the defensive midfielder. He didn’t look comfortable, and it was saved, but thankfully he managed to bundle the rebound over the line (pictured top) for his first in blue!

Chelsea, champions – May 2005

That Makelele goal only added to the party atmosphere inside Stamford Bridge on the day we lifted the league title for the first time in 50 years. It was a full-circle moment for Terry, who was appointed club captain ahead of the 2004/05 season and lifted the Premier League trophy after a game against Charlton, the team where it all began.
